According toVariety, Amazon Studios has begun work on an animated series that will be produced with its creators, Plan B Entertainment, and Project 51 Productions. “Wytchesfuses nail-biting horror and evocative drama while unearthing the dark lore surrounding an ancient burrow of witches,” said Melissa Wolfe, head of animation at Amazon Studios. “Given the haunting and intimate nature of Scott and Jock’s well-regarded comic series, we are looking forward to delivering their creative vision to our global audience and expanding our growing roster of animated series.”

“It’s all about the monsters that dwell beneath the surface of things, both literally and figuratively," Snyder said. “I’ve been intimately involved with this animated series from the start, and I can honestly say that I love this show as much as the book, if not more. The animation brings the incredible art by Jock to life, and the episodic format expands the world ofWytches, taking the characters and mythology to terrifying new places.” Snyder expressed his gratitude to the people involved in getting the project off the ground, saying, “Jock and I are deeply grateful to Plan B Entertainment, Kevin Kolde, and Amazon Studios for believing in ‘Wytches’ and giving us a chance to make this show dark, personal, twisted, and very special.”

Amazon is no newcomer to developing successful programming based on comic book and graphic novel sources, including their popular superhero showThe Boys, based on the comic by Garth Ennis, andthe recentPaper Girlsseries, adapted from Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang’s graphic novel of the same name. As a more visual art-oriented medium, an animated series feels like a perfect fit forWytches, which will undoubtedly be done well and artfully based on Amazon Prime Video’s recent successes withUndoneandThe Legend of Vox Machina, both getting praise for their animation and writing.

Wytcheshas been previously lauded for Jock’s moody and dark illustrations, as well as its compelling and emotionally wrought subject matter and spookiness. A new series adaptation will appeal tohorror and animation enthusiastsand fans of the original comic.
