Mysteries abound inWorld of Warcraft’s lore, many of which are fueled by the community’s virulent rumors and speculation. Most of these mysteries will never have more than question marks, but some are validated in spectacular fashion. One of the most enduring questions is that of the lost continent on the other side of Azeroth, just waiting to be discovered.

Far afield from archipelagos or small states like the Broken Isles or Zandalar, the lost continent is likely immense. It wouldn’t be only a handful of zones sandwiched between the already-discovered continents on Azeroth’s map, but would instead stretch the planet’s known corners to twice their initial size. SinceWorld of Warcraftwas first released, the far east has ended with the Twilight Highlands, and the farthest west anyone has ventured is Bloodmyst Isle off the coast of Kalimdor.

Azeroth’s World Map Doesn’t Quite Add Up

However vast the waters surrounding the Maelstrom might seem, the oceans betweenKalimdor and the Eastern Kingdomsare regularly traversed as the quickest and safest sailing route. Given that Azeroth is a sphere like any other planet, there has to be a reason that ships and zeppelins refuse to take any kind of shortcut that involves the other side of the world.

It has long been suspected that the truemagnitude of Azeroth’s landmassesremains concealed. Before the Sundering, all the continents on the map were one, having been shattered into multiple landmasses after the War of the Ancients some 10,000 years ago. But as for the lost continent, shrouded in violent storms, it’s likely that neither the Sundering nor the Cataclysm have had a devastating effect on it. Much like Pandaria, it has been sheltered from the brunt of Azeroth’s catastrophes, its denizens remaining silent.

The Cautionary Tale of Erinethria the Dragon

In theEmerald Dream zone inWorld of Warcraft: Dragonflight, players can obtain an intriguing lore book. “The Tragedy of Erinethria” recounts the legend of a green dragon who braved the ends of the world. Eons ago, long before the Sundering, the dragon Erinethria was the greatest flier in all of Azeroth. Her speed and stamina on the wing knew no equal, and she longed for adventure.

Erinethria had exhausted the novelty of ancient Kalimdor, and she decided to breach the veil of storms far to the west, aching to know what lay on the other side. Though her family warned against it, the green dragon set out, promising to return someday. The rest of her flight, including theGreen Aspect Ysera, searched far and wide, but Erinethria was never heard from again. However, her clutchmates claim to have felt Erinethria’s presence within their dreams, as if somewhere far beyond the horizon, she still lived.

World of Warcraft Has Been Leaving Breadcrumbs

Nowadays, Erinethria’s story is only told as a warning to stay under the wings of adventurous drakes who might be tempted to follow her. There is nothing out there beyond the west coast of Kalimdor except vicious storms that rip both sails and wings alike, so they say. But such assumptions have been wrong before. In fact, earlier in Dragonflight, the memoir of a night elf pirate was discovered, giving a first-hand account of something more than ocean lurking in the far west.

There’s a big and exciting mystery around Erinethria that deserves to be revealed!

Azeroth holds more and more surprises with each expansion, filling its map with new destinations all the time. InThe War Within, players will explorean underground kingdom, unknown until now. It’s no stretch to imagine that, in the near or far future, Erinethria’s discovery will be revealed. Perhaps this green dragon liked it so much that she decided to stay, or, as a more ominous possibility, she was captured or killed by its inhabitants. There’s no limit to the fantastical possibilities of what could be hidden within the stormy sea, and players deserve to find out.
