The PS5’s first featured launch title,Godfall, made a lot of promises with the trailer thatpremiered at The Game Awardslast Thursday. It has taken the helm for the PS5 with cutscenes rendered beautifully in-engine (powered by the Next-Gen system’s improved hardware) and a promise to introduce a new genre, Looter-Slasher, to the world of gaming.
That descriptor and genre thatGodfallseems to be boasting is what has most viewers scratching their heads, curious as to how the loot system will feed into the melee driven combat and character customization. For many games in the Looter categories, likeDiabloorDestiny, certain weapons have to stand out against each other by taking advantage of different types of damage and elements.

Unfortunately, there still isn’t much information out yet aboutGodfall, this flagship for theLooter-Slasher genre, but what can be seen in the short reveal trailer shows that their may be a number of different types of weapon that might show different types of damage. The specific shot in question shows a number of weapons, including swords, spears, and hammers, swirling around as the game shows off the massive collection of loot available for the game. It’s the hammer out of all of these weapons that really implies that there may be separate damage types inGodfallconsidering that a common way to differentiate weapon damage is splitting them into slashing, piercing, and blunt damage.
Similarly, when Creative Director Keith Lee spoke about the combat and customization inGodfall, Lee referencedMonster Hunterseveral times, which also utilizes different damage types depending on the weapon. As for elemental damage, it’s difficult to say if there are going to be elements that will factor intoGodfall’s combat, but some of the cinematics do seem to suggest that there is some sort of magic in game. If there is magic in the game, it would be strange for there to not be at least some form of elemental variation between spells and abilities.
Most ofGodfallis still up for speculation, but from what has been shown so far, it seems as though thisPS5 launch titlewill be one to look out for as Counterplay continues to hype up the game. Reportedly, there should be another look at the game coming in Spring 2020, likely in the form of a PlayStation State of Play, but until then fans will have to settle for the short trailer and a small GIF of combat.
Godfalllaunches in late 2020 for PC and PS5.
