James Gunn recently laid out a proposed outline for what the next decade should look like for movies, television, and video games connected toDC Comicsproperties. Gunn clarified that someDCproperties will exist outside the connective DCU continuity, instead fall under the umbrella of “DC Elseworlds,” but the DCU plans to be wholly connected otherwise. This means movies, television, and games will share narratives and characters, interweaving between one another holistically. No mention of possible games were announced, but Gunn did make note that video games are going to be involved in this continuity.

That seems to imply thata couple of games are being considered as part of the DCU, and it will be interesting to see which titles from the proposed DCU outline are most closely related. For example, one of these DCU games could tie into Gunn’s confirmedSuperman: Legacymovie, which releases in 2025. Either way, the DCU will have its hands full casting potential actors, and one problem arises when considering how they will need to be inherently multifaceted. This means typical gaming voice actors may fall to the wayside when roles are cast.

Game Actors Will Inevitably Lose Out on DCU Roles

DC games have largely been lumped into two categories over the last decade:Rocksteady’s Arkhamverseand other miscellaneous games. This is still the case in the present day too, sinceSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leagueis confirmed to be an extension of theArkhamuniverse. Even though these characters and their portrayals are iconic, there will likely be no place for them in the DCU.

It is more than possible for an incredible voice actor to play a character in a game, but if that actor looks nothing like the character they play - assuming the character is human and not created with CGI - they might not translate well to live-action. If actors need to transcend one medium to land the role, then it is unlikely that any current DC games actors will be accommodated inGunn’s DCU.

It can be assumed that based on this model,Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leaguewould not belong to the DCU’s continuity because Amanda Waller is played by Debra Wilson and not Viola Davis. This would also seemingly rule out anInjustice 3being connected to the DCU. In this case, the canceledBatgirlmovie would be a fantastic game adaptation choiceif its original cast could reprise their roles.

DCU Talent Will Need to Be Invested and Multifaceted

Movies and television undoubtedly need a certain level of dedication, but games are another beast entirely. Comprehending how many lines of dialogue actors typically need to record for a 10-to-15 hour game alone is mind-boggling, and many movie actors may not have the stamina to sustain that workload across the span of 10 years while also working on multiple live-action and animated adaptations.

Of course, not every DCU character is going to have their own game, but if games are indeed a part of this whole DCU formula, it is likely that many actors will be chosen to feature as playable protagonists if not important NPCs. It is still unknownwhere Monolith’sWonder Womanstands in the midst of this news. That said, it is always possible that there could be miscellaneousDCgames that are not connected to the DCU, and perhaps fall under DC Elseworlds content instead.
