The recently releasedHalo Infinitecampaign trailer was received positively by the community, with many praising the game’s open-ended approach and polished visuals. While the trailer offers plenty of insight into different elements ofHalo Infinite’s campaign, one that sticks out is the new AI companion that will accompany Master Chief in his journey through Zeta Halo.
The E3 2019 trailer forHalo Infinitefirst revealed this pilot, who plays an important role inHalo Infinite’s story. While details about him remain a mystery,Halo Infinitefans have a theory about his role in the game. If the trailers are any indications, the pilot may have the same role as Atreus inGod of War(2018). Given how engaging the dynamic is between Atreus and Kratos,Halo Infinitecould learn a thing or two from it to also deliver a compelling narrative experience.

Organic Interactions Between Master Chief and His Companions
Master Chief and Kratos are both quiet soldiers who do not usually show sentimentality. However, with 2018’sGod of War, Santa Monica Studio delivered an experience that depicted Kratos' transition from a merciless killer to a responsible father figure. Much of this transition comes from organic interactions that occur betweenKratos and Atreusover their journey. For instance, Mimir’s boat stories allowed Kratos and Atreus to interact and ease up around each other. These made some ofGod of War’s most intriguing moments, and they occurred naturally when traversing from one point to another.
Just likeGod of War,Halo Infinitefeatures a semi-open world. Players will traverse long stretches of wilderness in search of enemy encampments, and such organic interactions between Chief, his AI companion, and the pilot could really amp up the journey. Since the pilot and a new AI are accompanying Master Chief for the first time, there’s room for introductions and character development. Meaningful interactions between this trio could reveal Chief’s backstory and his connections to Dr. Halsey, something that’s primarily explored in theHalonovels.
Zeta Halo is a mystery of its own, and since Chief finds the new AI there, she may know more about the installation. As such, interactions have the possibility of exploring the history and lore ofZeta Halo. These interactions provide an opportunity to delve deep intoHalo’s expanded universe in believable ways.
Raising the Stake with Characters
While exploring the backstories of characters and the world is feasible through organic interactions,Halo Infiniteneeds to raise the stake with its characters if it wants to tell an emotional story.God of Wardoes this by occasionally putting Atreus in danger. Compared to Kratos, Atreus is mostly defenseless. As such, the game often puts him in precarious situations where Kratos has to get him out of trouble. The opening battle inGod of Waris a prime example, something thatHalo Infiniteneeds to pull off to really intensify the dynamic between Master Chief, the pilot, and his new AI. Thankfully, the possibility of this happening is high, as the Chief will encounter plenty of dangerous enemies.
Halo Infinite’s campaignis shaping up to tell the most humanHalostory yet. The recent trailer sets Master Chief on Cortana’s trail somewhere in Zeta Halo, with the new AI companion and pilot seemingly accompanying him throughout this journey. WithHalo 4, 343 Industries proved it has the potential of delivering an intense character-driven storyline, and withHalo Infiniteit could deliver on that front more fully.
