Speedrunning is a test of the will, determination, and perseverance of gamers attempting to complete a game as quickly as possible. FromSuper MariotoDark Souls, the speedrunning communities of these games are constantly on the hunt for new and improved ways to complete the game quickly.

Whether speedrunners are jumping backward and gaining so much speed they clip through walls, or corrupting the memory of their save at the start of the game to warp to the credits instantly, speedrunners will constantly look for waysto find skips and break games into pieces to beat it as quickly as possible!

Not surprisingly, a Valve game has a few skips that can be exploited.Portalis meant to be a puzzle/platformer that tests the players' perception of reality, but for the six-minute speedrun of Portal, players break out of bounds in the first five seconds, and spend more time out of bounds than in bounds!

Dark Souls Ornstein and Smough

Speedrunners grab intractable items in the environment and press themselves between a wall and the item. Doing this while quick-saving and quick-loading pushes the character model through the geometry of the level, and completes the game in under six minutes.

Dark Soulsisa notoriously hard gamewith a few skips, including the Homeward wrong warp skip. To perform this glitch, speedrunners must perform a specific set of inputs to wrong warp to the Kiln of the First Flame; or the end of the game.

Spyro 2 Riptos Rage Spyro on skateboard

Start by setting the character’s home bonfire as Firelink Altar, go to any other bonfire and cast the miracle Homeward, and at the same time sit at the bonfire. This confuses the Homeward spell into not knowing where to send the player. The game will then place the player at Firelink Altar, with the path to the end of the game open.

8Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage

InSpyro 2: Ripto’s Rage,Runners use proxy jumps, a glitch that allows the player to jump higher than allowed normally, breaking out of the bounds of the game.

To perform a proxy jump, the player must fit the character where it cannot fit. This is typically done with wall geometry players use to bounce out of bounds and complete the game. Once the character is in the location they don’t fit in the game will try to spit the character out in the direction of least resistance, up, which allows players to skip most of the game.

The Legend Of Zelda Ocarina Of Time Deku Tree

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Timehas some interesting skips. Utilizing Arbitrary Code Execution, players can manipulate game code to skip directly to the end credits of the game. This glitch is incredibly confusing to watch, and the execution is no simple task.

Players start by naming the file a specific name and then perform a set of inputs to arrange data in the memory of the game to emulate code. Runners manipulate the location where the game runs the code, to instantly warp to the end credits.

AnotherValve game makes the list. BreakingHalf-Life 2is as easy as standing on top of a prop, grabbing it, and walking forward. This glitch allows runners to gain infinite height if needed to skip over barriers throughout the game.

Half-Life 2 enemies

Utilizing prop flight combined with bunny hopping, performed by timing jumps with the frame they land, runners retain speed from jumping, and adding more speed with every jump to cross levels allows speedrunners to beatHalf-Life 2in just under 43 minutes.

In the 16-star speedrun forSuper Mario 64, players mustutilize a host of glitches/skips; from the Mips glitch to the iconic backward long jump. The backward long jump allows Mario to break through walls in the game through sheer movement speed.

If Mario is near a set of stairs, the player can spam the backward long jump input and Mario will gain speed exponentially, allowing him to clip straight through the Bowser door at the end of the game. This gives players access to the final stage, skipping over 80% of the game’s required star collection.

Outlastis a completely brokenspeedrun. Players skip from the start of the game to the end using simple platforming to fall through the map. Once players gain control of the character, enter the courtyard for the asylum, and navigate to the row of bushes on the right side of the level.

An asylum inmate in Outlast

In this row of bushes, there is poor collision around the border of two bushes. Using this geometry and a precise jump, the character will land on top of the bush, breaking out of bounds. Once the player is on top of the bushes, one more precise jump will trigger the loading zone for the lab at the end of the game, and the final cut scene is a brief walk through the asylum.

3Pokemon Blue

In the Any% speedrun forforPokemon Blue, there is not a single Pokemon battle. Utilizing save corruption, speedrunners can skip from the start of the game to the credits.

Name the characters ASH and GARY. Go downstairs in the player’s home, and stand one tile away from the door. At this point, save the game, and immediately turn the console off before the message “now saving” pops up. Reboot the console, and upon loading the save the menu will be glitched. Selecting specific menu options will glitch the game and wrong warp the player to the credits.

2Sonic The Hedgehog (2006)

Another wrong warp makes the list! This skip is performed by exploiting the Hover Glitch. The player must complete the game up to Solaris Phase 2 which takes place in the “End of the World” level.

After reaching this level, the player can chain together the Homing Attack towards Solaris, at the same time as Elise, which gives Sonic the ability to retain the Homing Attack until touching the ground again. Using this, Sonic can navigate through barriers that the player normally could not cross, completing the level, and triggering the end credits for the game.

1Two Worlds

Perhaps the funniest entry on the list,Two Worldshas an amazing skip involving the villagers of a small town rising against the main villain of the game. This can only be done on the original patch, but it is a great speedrun to watch.

The game introduces the final boss right away, and if the player attacks the boss and pulls aggro, the final boss will then chase the player to the nearest village and cast Fireball, a splash damage spell. This makes the villagers angry, and start attacking the final boss. Once defeated, the final credits roll. Who says the good guys never win?
