Marvel’s Spider-Man 2has been one of the most anticipated games of the last few years for a lot of reasons. Not only is it following up the massively successfulMarvel’s Spider-ManandMarvel’s Spider-Man:Miles Morales, but Insomniac is expanding on its formula in almost every way. From additional traversal methods to a larger New York City to explore,Marvel’s Spider-Man 2looks to be one of the biggest games of fall 2023. If gameplay changes weren’t enough, Insomniac is also giving Peter Parker and Miles Morales one of their most complex challenges yet in the form of Kraven the Hunter and Venom.

The latter of those villains is cause for most of the buzz surroundingMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, as Venom has reigned as one of Spidey’s most prominent antagonists for decades. Insomniac appears to have some bold and exciting things in store for this depiction of the character, as it can be inferred thatHarry Osborn will be Venom instead of Eddie Brock, the usual host of the symbiote. This opens up a lot of questions on how the game will handle Venom in terms of his characterization and role in the story, but there’s one storytelling decision it’s safe to assume Insomniac will avoid with the symbiote.

Venom Likely Won’t Die In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

It’s unclear just how much of a threat Venom will be inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, but gameplay footage and concept art have shown that the symbiote will play an integral role. Not only does the symbiote itself pose a threat to Peter and Miles, but this depiction of Venom could share a more personal connection to Peter considering Harry is his best friend. For this reason alone, it’s safe to assume that the Venom symbiote will not be killed off in this game. Even withthe Venom symbiote corrupting Peterfor part of the game, he and Miles will likely do everything they can to neutralize the alien monster instead since neither of them is murderous.

In addition to Peter Parker’s connection to Insomniac’s Venom, having the character die would go against how both Spider-Men operate. Despite everything Doc Ock did inMarvel’s Spider-Man, Peter never so much as considered killing the man who was his mentor. It is true that in various other forms of Spider-Man media villains often die due to their own hubris, but it’s unlikely that Insomniac would pull a similar move. The developer has already demonstrated its prowess in doing original and exciting things withSpider-Man villains, and it will likely demonstrate those same strengths when deciding Venom’s fate.

Venom is Too Valuable To Die

Characterizations and depictions aside, it’s highly unlikely Venom will die inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2simply because he is too valuable a tool for future installments. Depending on where the series goes after the impending sequel, Venom could serve as the lone antagonist for a future spin-off, whether it’s Harry Osborn, Eddie Brock, or someone else.

The character shares many similarities toBatman’s Jokerin that since he is so popular, he rarely dies or stays dead for long because he’s so frequently compelling. Venom’s death would also damage the possibility of Carnage coming to the series, another villain many fans have been clamoring for.

It’s hard to overstate just how much hype there is behindMarvel’s Spider-Man2. Between the popularity of the first installment and its potential as a technical showcase for the PS5, not sinceGod of War Ragnarokhas the PlayStation community been so united in excitement for a new release. Venom plays a significant role in that excitement, and considering the villain’s importance to Spider-Man and the potential for future appearances, it’s highly unlikely he will be glossed over. He may not always be the same Venom we see inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, but it’s safe to say the symbiote could stick around for as long as Insomniac continues to work on the series.
