Fans ofEscape from TarkovandChivalry 2have a new project worth watching, it seems. Developer Matrioshka Games, which made the 2D action-RPGFallen Angel, and publisher Wandering Wizard, known for the early access survival MMOOutlaws of the Old West, have partnered for a new project. That game isExpedition Agartha, a first-person PvPvE game that swapsEscape from Tarkov’s soviet military aesthetic for a full medieval experience.

The premise of bothEscape from TarkovandExpedition Agarthais the same. Players will be tasked with exploring, looting, and extracting to safety, while also dealing withhardcore full-loot PvP. The island setting ofExpedition Agartha, discovered within the Lost Continent of Mu, takes no prisoners. The island is littered with not just player opponents, but also bandits and other dangerous NPCs. Fitting its medieval nature,Expedition Agarthawill also have quests and even raids to take on.

WhereEscape from Tarkovends andChivalry 2begins is inExpedition Agartha’s combat. Obviously, as a medieval game, rifles and long-range weapons, in general, aren’t the name of the game. Instead,Expedition Agarthawill feature skill-based melee action with blocking, dodging, and both light and heavy attacks. No longer will players have to deal with randomly being one-shot by an enemy never seen. Instead, players will have to get messy in melee to claim their opponents' loot.

To get into the finer detail ofExpedition Agartha, it’s a PvP game based around co-op parties of up to three players. Once in-game, players can choose whether to hunt other teams or simply farm gear from NPCs.Survivalis the main priority, as dying means losing gear and progression, but successful extraction means taking earned loot into the next expedition. Even if players die over and over and have nothing left, however, they’ll be able to queue as a Freebooter instead of as a Mercenary, like a free life to try and re-earn their lost gear.

As exciting as the premise ofExpedition Agarthais, much will be dependent on the game’s server structure and gameplay.Escape from Tarkovplayerswill recall that it took the developer a very long time to smooth out issues tied to lag, losing gear, and overall persistence issues. And that isn’t mentioning the hackers. Matrioshka Games has a lot to prove in order to earn players' trust.

For the time being,Expedition Agarthais only confirmed for the PC platform. Its release window is also an ambiguous 2022, though Matrioshka Games does note it’s “coming soon” so perhaps it’ll be early 2022. There’s also mention of open beta plans, with access gained through the official Discord channel. Expect more information soon.
