While Insomniac Games’ recent releases starring the character have been widely regarded as the bestSpider-Mangames ever made, there are plenty of excellent Spidey titles. One particularly popular game released in 2005, with manySpider-Manfans still appreciatingUltimate Spider-Manover a decade and a half later.
There were a fewthings that madeUltimate Spider-Manstand out, the first being its unique, cel shaded art style. The look of the game resembled the comic books that it was based on, and the stylistic choice helps it hold up well years after its debut. The game also stood out by making both Venom and Spider-Man playable. The two characters each had their own movesets, with Venom providing much darker gameplay than Peter did due to his ability to consume humans for health.

WithInsomniac’sMarvel’s Spider-Man 2likely going to feature two playable characters, revisitingUltimate Spider-Manseems fitting. This is exactly what one modder did, with Reddit user tar3k10 showing off their creation. In the clip, Miles is seen swinging through a nighttime version of New York City while the song “What’s Up Danger” fromSpider-Man: Into The Spider-Verseplays in the background. With all the pieces in place, the player is able to recreate Miles’ first swing from the critically acclaimed movie.
Part of what makes the clip so great is that segments from the animated film’s swing are recreated, such as when Miles runs and jumps off a crane and screams “woo.” Some text then follows the player as they plummet toward the ground, a nice touch that helps the clip capture the immense sense of styleseen inSpider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. The modder even remembers to swap out the picture next to the health bar, which shows the character they are playing as. Fittingly, they use a picture of Miles fromInto The Spider-Verseinstead of some comic art or Insomniac’s model.
WithUltimate Spider-Man’s cel shaded art style allowing Miles’Into The Spider-Versedesign to translate well into the game, the modder chose the perfect version of the character to adapt. In the comments, tar3k10 confirms that the footage was made using a Miles skin mod, a widescreen and FPS fix, and a reshade. Unsurprisingly, fans loved the clip, with it bringing in almost 2,000 upvotes in a day. Several comments talked about wanting a remaster forUltimate Spider-Man, while users like creator01 wanted to see a new Spidey game with cartoonish graphics instead of the realistic art style from theInsomniac Gamestitles.
With some other fans recently sharing anUltimate Spider-Man-themed posterforMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, the nostalgia for the game is clear. While a remaster is unlikely, it does seem like modders are finding ways to breathe new life intoUltimate Spider-Man.
