Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3was one of the seventh generation’s most fondly remembered fighting games, as it was a huge hit for Marvel, Capcom, and the fighting game community. It pitted the iconic heroes and villains from the rosters of both companies into team based 3-on-3 battles, where it enjoyed plenty of competitive action and representation at fighting game tournaments like EVO. While it has an active competitive scene, the port from the PS3 and Xbox 360 to new hardware and PCs in 2017 opened the floodgates formodding potential.
More recently, modders have gone and broke through the game’s built-in limitations, which have resulted in some incredibly ambitious mods. This culminated in a mod known as theUltimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3palette swap mod, created by tabs. It had added over 20 different characters into the game, who are accessible by taking the slots of a character’s alternate costume and turning it into its own custom character. This mod has seen characters like Thanos, Monster Hunter, Cammy, and even HUNK fromResident Evilbeing added into the game with their own unique moveset. The latest update adds another custom character to the game, the villainous Ultron.

Ultron was a playable character inMarvel vs. Capcom Infinite, where he even teamed up with Capcom’s Sigma fromMega Man X, the duo becoming the primary antagonists ofMvC:I’s story mode. Ultron’s gameplay heavily relies on his Ultron drones, where they can swarm in and attack, or he can blast his opponents with lasers. This is translated perfectly into tabs' mod forUltimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, where all of his gameplay mechanics fromInfiniteare retained.
According to Glass, a frequent collaborator with tabs, this was possible due to a recent development that was made in the modding scene ofUltimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, more specifically regarding the playable character ofFrank West fromDead Rising. Frank’s move set inUMvC3utilizes zombies as a weapon, where he can toss them or attack using them. It turns out Ultron’s drones use the same mechanics as the zombies, which is what allowed them to function and appear as they do in this mod.
Since the release of the palette swap mod forUltimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, tabs' mods have seen a lot of attention and playtime. With tabs' work being showcased on fighting game focused YouTube channels like Maximillian Dood, they thanked the many fans for their support on the mods. They’re still working on adding new characters, like Sherry and her appearance fromResident Evil 6, intoUMvC3.
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3is available now on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
