The often-gloomy world of the dark fantasy franchiseThe Witcheris filled with morally-ambiguous characters whose turbulent relationships with those around them drive the story to its heartbreaking conclusion. However, there are three characters whose troubled dynamic seems to be especially memorable to fans: Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer of Vengerberg, and Triss Merigold. While the tangled love triangle between them takes on different forms in different versions ofThe Witcher, actor Henry Cavill has officially shared his opinion on which sorceress Geralt should choose.
In all versions ofThe Witcher, Geralt of Rivia is an ancient monster-hunting super soldier known as a witcher while Yennefer and Triss are both sorceresses with a long history. AlthoughThe Witcher’s protagonists aren’t always kind to each other, Yennefer came through for Geralt when nobody else could, while Triss appears to offer him a sense of stability often missing from his life as a witcher.

According to Henry Cavill, who stars as Geralt inThe WitcherNetflix series, choosing Yennefer seems truer to the core of who Geralt is. The pair’s complicated relationship forms one of the major foundations of the franchise as a whole and the original books included a questionably-canon installment where they got married. However, Yennefer was largely absent in the games untilThe Witcher 3: Wild Huntforces Geralt to decide exactly what she means to him.
The actor did admit that the nice thing aboutThe Witchergames, which he has reportedly been playing during the pandemic, is that they allow players to make their own decisions.The Witchergames pick up in the aftermath of the books, after Geralt and Yennefer narrowly survive the incident that probably killed them in the original story, but the pair are separated and Geralt is struck with amnesia. Despite this, it’s made clear that some part of Geralt still remembers Yennefer. If certain choices are made inThe Witcher 3: Wild Huntthen Yenneferand Geralt will rekindle their romance despite the time that has passed and the fact that they now lead separate lives.
Triss Merigold also has the potential to develop a powerful relationship with Geralt over the course of the games, but according to Henry Cavill, he still saw Geralt and Yennefer’s relationship as more true to the characters. In the series, Yennefer’s backstory has already been explored and her turbulent relationship with Geralt begun, while Triss is just arriving on the scene. Although it remains to be seen exactly where theNetflix series will take Yennefer, the emphasis the show has already placed on her may be telling.
