It’s been a long road, one filled with plenty of death and tragedy, along with the occasional dash of hope and promise. Countless walkers have been dispatched over the years, but soon it will be time to hang up the trusty katana and sheriff’s hat for good. For veteran fans who have seen it all, be sure not to miss the beginning of the end on August 22.
15Beside The Dying Fire (9.2)
Season 2, Episode 13
The events of the second season come to a fiery conclusion in this finale episode. The idyllic promise of the Greene Farm is irrevocably shattered with the arrival of a massive party of walkers, who proceed to lay waste to the property. In the aftermath of yet another close escape, the group begins to question Rick’s leadership.
The episode is notable for its conclusion, which reveals a stunning realization (at least to the characters). Rick explains that everyone is unknowingly infected. People are doomed to turn into walkers, regardless of whether or not they were previously bitten. The ending foreshadows the group’s eventual discovery of the prison in Season 3.

Season 4, Episode 16
Season finales tend to be pretty exciting. The final episode of the fourth season is no exception. Rick’s group finally makes it to Terminus, only to discover that appearances can be deceiving. Along the way, Rick himself tries to come to grips in his own quest to find balance when it comes to his morality.
One of the more memorable scenes from this episode comes when Rick brutally executes a group of assailants who temporarily take his party captive. It’s a pretty visceral scene that serves to highlight how far Rick is willing to go to ensure the safety of his family and friends.
13The Grove (9.2)
Season 4, Episode 14
Once again taking place in Season 4, “The Grove” primarily revolves around Carol, Tyreese, Lizzie, and Mika. It’s a fairly hard-hitting episode that deals with the further deterioration of Lizzie’s grasp on reality.

As the safety of the group is threatened by Lizzie’s increasingly bizarre behavior, Carol is forced to take drastic action that leaves both herself and Tyreese shaken by the experience. It’s certainly one of the more tragic episodes, which is saying something considering the entire series is filled with instances of tragedy and loss.

Season 6, Episode 2
The season six episode, “JSS”, tends to be highly regarded by fans due to the strong character development displayed within it. In particular, the characters of Enid, Carol, and Morgan stand out as they all struggle to contend with their inner demons.
The climax of the episode revolves around an attack on Alexandria by a group of raiders called the Wolves. Fans also learn the significance of the “JSS” brand on Enid’s hand by taking a look at her sorrowful backstory.
11The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be (9.2)
Season 7, Episode 1
The seventh season premiere ofThe Walking Deadstarted off with a bang. Fans waited a little over six months to find out the answer to the question that lit social media on fire:Who did Negan kill? Now, for comic book aficionados, the answer was already well known. But for those who didn’t follow the comics the brutal execution of a beloved character hit pretty hard.
This episode established the beginning of along and complex storylinethat would involve Rick’s group, his allies, and the Saviors. The war between them wouldn’t be resolved until the Season 8 finale. The graphic death of one of the series' most popular characters in this episode wouldn’t be something that fans would soon forget.
10What Comes After (9.2)
Season 9, Episode 5
Rick Grimes is, unsurprisingly, the most recognizable character inThe Walking Dead. As the series protagonist, viewers have shared Rick’s many trials and tribulations since the beginning. The title “What Comes After” is an apt one considering it marks not only the final appearance of Rick but also the transition to a new chapter of sorts for the show.

The character’s heroic act of self-sacrifice on the bridge can definitely be added to the list of memorable moments the show has witnessed. Fans, no doubt, are waiting with palpable anticipation to see whether or not their hero returns in Season 11.
9Here’s Negan (9.3)
Season 10, Episode 22
The tenth season finale digs deep into the backstory of the show’s most prolific antagonist. Consisting of a series of flashbacks, Negan’s life before the apocalypse is explored. In particular, his strained relationship with his wife Lucille (played by Hilarie Burton-Morgan) is given much prominence.
Longtime fans of the show were no doubt delighted to get an origin story for the charismatic Negan. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is given plenty of space in this episode to flex his acting prowess and doesn’t disappoint. What’s next in store for the character can only be answered in the upcoming final season of the series.
Season 2, Episode 7
One of the significant plot points that revolve around season two is the search for Carol’s daughter, Sophia. She is separated from the rest of the group when a herd of walkers suddenly appears along the highway. Despite Rick’s efforts, he is unable to locate her.
“Pretty Much Dead Already” finally puts the matter to rest by revealing the sad truth of what happened to Sophia. It’s arguably one of the series' most memorable scenes from the early days. As a story element, it serves tounderscore the harsh realitythe characters must contend with within the new world.
7Killer Within (9.3)
Season 3, Episode 4
“Killer Within” was yet another episode that witnesses the deaths of two longstanding characters. The episode is split between Michonne’s investigation into Woodbury and daily life at the prison among Rick’s group. When the relative tranquility of the prison is shattered by a horde of walkers, things take a tragic turn.

Inevitably, as the physical integrity of the prison is aggressively assaulted, not everyone makes it out alive. For Rick, one death, in particular, sends him spiraling into a deep depression that serves as a pivotal moment for his character.
6Conquer (9.3)
Season 5, Episode 16
The fifth season finale ratchets up the tension brewing in Alexandria. Much of the drama is centered around Rick’s status in the community. The townspeople view him as unhinged as they continually witness examples of his erratic behavior concerning the safety of Alexandria.
“Conquer” also focuses on the plight of Father Gabriel as well as the guilt-ridden Sasha. The actors do a superb job of highlighting the emotional and moral crossroads these two characters find themselves in by the end of the season.
