One of the most exciting aspects of June’s major gaming events like E3 and the Summer Game Fest is the shadow drops. Publishers and developers sometimes try to capitalize on the excitement by releasing a game in the midst of the chaos. This year, Electronic Arts is getting in on the action, bringing backStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Fans of the action RPG or new players now have access to the shadow-dropped next-gen upgrade forStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
The announcement was made Friday morning, coinciding with Electronic Arts' shadow drop ofStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderon next-gen platforms. That means thatStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderis now available on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Cross-generation upgrades for those who own the game on PS4 and Xbox One are completely free. Those wanting to pick up the next-generation version ofStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Ordercan buy either a digital or physical edition for $39.99.

These next-gen upgrades are, obviously, much more than straight ports. Respawn has gone back in and built in some exciting new graphical and technical features forStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. The four core areas that have been improved include higher resolution textures and assets used throughout the game,4K resolution with HDR, improved 60 fps performance, as well as better loading times. There’s no additional story-based content or new gameplay.
As nice as it would be if the game worked at 4K 60fps, like with most next-gen games Respawn has instead implemented two different visual modes forStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. TurningPerformance Modeon will display the game at 1440p and 60 fps. Turning Performance Mode off will render the game at 4K and 30 fps. On Xbox Series S there will be no option, with graphics settings locked at 1080p and 60fps.
Electronic Arts also goes to great lengths in its announcement to assureStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderplayersthat upgrading to next-gen consoles will retain everything they’d want to retain. Save files will transfer over, though PS4 gamers will have to manually import them. Achievements and trophies will carry over automatically via players' accounts. Digital Deluxe Edition benefits will all carry over as well. Upgrading will be a seamless transition.
The shadow drop ofStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderjust before E3 2021 begins is certain to trigger some speculation regarding a potential sequel or expansion. Many assume aStar Wars Jedisequelis in development, though an announcement this early would be a surprise. Plus, EA Play 2021 won’t start until July 22. It looks like this welcomed surprise may just be a cool thing capitalizing on E3’s hype with no strings attached.
