Summary
Part of the joys ofStar Wars’ galaxy far, far away is the incredibly designed starships and starfighters. Whether it’s the sound they emit, or how they look and control, these spaceships are integral to the DNA ofStar Wars, so it’s only natural that gamers and fans out there would want to fly X-Wings, which is perhaps themost iconic class ofStar Warsstarfighteroutside of TIE Fighters and the Millennium Falcon.
Luckily, some incredibly accessible games on the market are still around, even decades later, allowing players to suit up and embark on a voyage in the galaxy far, far away, playing the bestStar WarsX-Wing games to live out their epic space fantasy, complete with combat, barrel rolls, and John Williams’ music.
Become an ace starfighter inStar Wars: Squadrons, where players can take to the galaxy far, far away in a thrilling conquest of the stars, battling inside an X-Wing to fight TIE Fighters.Squadronsare all about dogfights, and players can either enjoy these fights within the story mode, or against other players in the multiplayer mode.
Squadronsalso have a VR mode for players who truly want to immerse in theStar Warsuniverse, being placed in the cockpit of the iconic starfighters and becoming one of the greatest pilots to ever live. Thegalactic space battlescan be a lot of fun, and the modern graphics make it a thrilling ride.
Take to the stars inStar Wars: Battlefront 2, braving the frontier with intensive battles and dogfights above some iconic planets. Players can enter X-Wings and battle againstTIE Fighters alongside the Millennium Falcon, fighting the Galactic Empire across a range of locations.Battlefront 2also has multiple abilities for the X-Wing, and players can fly it in first-person or third-person.
WhilstBattlefront 2isn’t fully fledged for the X-Wing like other titles, it’s still a great game mode in a massive multiplayer game, where combat takes the forefront. Players can respawn time and again to ensure that these dogfights are endless and fun.
TheRogue Squadrongames are iconic, so much so, that a film was set to release from director Patty Jenkins. Whilst the film has been shelved, the games still exist as greatStar Warscontent, especially the sequel,Rogue Squadron 2: Rogue Leader. The game comes from the GameCube, with great visuals and agrand use of its hardwareto make the game stand out, especially as it spans the Original Trilogy.
Flying an X-Wing in theRogue Squadrongames is smooth, and firing the ship’s missiles and blasters feels great and responsive. Who wouldn’t love to embark on a dogfight against TIE Fighters in aStar Warsgame? The expansive 10 missions certainly help bring life to this title too.
3Star Wars – X-Wing Alliance
Steam Rating: 9/10 (356 Reviews)
The final entry in theX-Wingseries,X-Wing Alliancelooks great, with improved controls and better mission sets than its predecessors. Navigating past Star Destroyers and seeing the Death Star 2,X-Wing Allianceis vastly entertaining and equal parts intense, whether players are in the Millennium Falcon or an X-Wing.
If there’s something thatX-Wing Alliancelacks, it’s that the in-game HUD is less immersive, so players won’t have to rely on their cockpit to know their statistics, ammunition, and health. It’s a feature that otherX-Winggames have, which makes them great, butX-Wing Alliancewins out thanks to its scenery, graphics, and missions.
Whilst fights are commonplace in EA and DICE’s firstBattlefront, space battles are perhaps the most unique. In the Death Star DLC, the third expansion pack,Star Wars: Battlefront, players could battle outside the Death Star, and even download theStar Wars Battlefront Rogue One: VR Mission, allowing them to use a VR headset to embark on an adventurethrough the trenches of the iconic Death Star.
In the game itself, players can fight across space against their TIE Fighter foes, manning the pilot seat of an X-Wing with some stunning graphics, thanks to the realStar Warsprops that were scanned into the game. It’s never felt so good, nor looked so good, to fly an X-Wing.
TheLEGO Star Warsgames often include nearly enough for every character and vehicle, butLEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Sagagoes above and beyond thanks to the inclusion of the entire Skywalker Saga, from Episode 1 to Episode 9.LEGO Star Warsfeatures plenty of amazing characters and locations, but being able to venture to them in an X-Wing makes it even better.
Players can assemble a LEGO X-Wing and take to the stars, venturing out into the openness of space, and using hyperspace to visit new planets, moons, and space stations. The space combat also feels great, so if players run into a rogue squadron of TIE Fighters, it’sa fun time for all.
