Summary
There are so many what-ifs in theStar Warsuniverse, and one of the biggest is what might have happened if Darth Vader had locatedYoda on Dagobah. Both are masters in their own right, but with the rage and drive to wipe out the Jedi at Vader’s back, fans have wondered who would have prevailed if the two had come to blows. With their past in mind, it’s not likely that Yoda could have done anything to turn Darth Vader back to the Light Side of the Force.
If the two titans ofStar Warscame to blows, it’s hard to determine which one would have come out on top. With Yoda marching toward the end of his life, he may have been weakened physically, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be a threat. At the same time, Darth Vader would be limited by his suit and injuries. Yet, he managed to defeat many Jedi just as impressive as Yoda throughout his time hunting them across the galaxy.
Why Didn’t Darth Vader Find Yoda?
The precise reason Darth Vader never found Yoda is an interesting mystery, though there are a few possible explanations. Yoda is incredibly skilled in the ways of the Force, being one of the oldest practitioners in the galaxy by the time he goes into exile. Yoda’s skill in the Force would have allowed him to practice a similar skill tothe ever-returning Emperor Palpatinewhen he was in hiding: Force Stealth. With Yoda’s presence in the Force cloaked, there really wasn’t any way for the Empire, Darth Vader, or Vader’s Inquisitors to find the Jedi master.
Another potential explanation isthe planet Dagobahitself. The planet is mysterious in nature and, for whatever reason, has a tight-knit connection to the Force itself, demonstrated by the living caves on the planet. It’s possible that because the planet is so in tune with the Force, it was able to act as a means of further hiding Yoda’s connection to the Force from the Empire.
At the same time, it’s possible that Emperor Palpatine didn’t want Vaderor his Inquisitorsseeking out someone as powerful as Yoda. The threat of Yoda was likely always in the back of Palpatine’s mind, but knowing that he had last made his enemy flee likely led him to believe that Yoda had resigned himself to defeat. Palpatine may have considered that Vader hunting Yoda could offer Vader a potential route back to the Light Side. Furthermore, Palpatine may not have thought Darth Vader could have defeated Yoda one-on-one.
Who Was Stronger: Yoda Or Darth Vader?
Darth Vader was a master duelist and a force to be reckoned with. He was more than capable of cutting down almost anyone who stood before him, former Jedi Master or not. His cybernetic enhancements made him brutally powerful, but that came with a significant trade-off in speed and maneuverability. Additionally, his cybernetic limbs and the fact thathis suit itself acted as a kind of life support device, hindered his connection to the Force. With that limitation, the boy who once had the potential to be even more powerful than Emperor Palpatine had no hope of surpassing him. Despite Darth Vader’s weaknesses, though, he was still one of the deadliest men in the galaxy. All who heard his name feared him, and hoped that they would never feel his wrath.
The Jedi Master Yoda was deceptively powerful. Despite his small and frail stature, Yoda was capable of engaging in duels with the likes ofCount Dooku, one of the most feared duelists in the galaxy, and even forced him to flee. His lightsaber skills are nothing to scoff at, as his mastery of Ataru led him to gain the upper hand against Darth Sidious, even if he would later lose that fight. Aside from his lightsaber skills, Yoda was said to be one of the most powerful Force users in the galaxy. It was his knowledge and connection to the Force that made him so powerful, something that he only continued to further during his time in exile.
It’s a debate as old as time, but it is a question that seems to have a pretty simple answer. When it comes down to both combatants in their prime, Yoda was superior to Darth Vader. That debate extends even further toprime Anakin Skywalkeras well. He would have been outmatched by Yoda for many of the same reasons Obi-Wan outmatched him, and more.
Could Darth Vader Have Defeated Yoda?
With all of that in mind, if Darth Vader had managed to find feeble old Yoda sometime around the same period as the beginning ofA New Hope, he likely still would not havebeen able to defeat the Jedi Master. While Darth Vader may have perfected his fighting style and grown used to the limitations of his suit, his connection to the Force was almost severed. Yoda, on the other hand, had only continued to further his studies of the Force, thus becoming even more powerful than he was before.
Yoda may not have been in the same kind of fighting shape in the original trilogy as he was in the prequel trilogy, but his Force abilities had the potential to be infinitely more powerful. With the home-field advantage of living on Dagobah for years and his enhanced Force abilities, Yoda might not ever even need to engage in a lightsaber duel with Vader. He could potentially use nothing but the Force and the terrain to defeat and demoralize the Sith Lord. If Yoda were still capable of dueling as he had during the Clone Wars era, Darth Vader would have been met with a resounding loss for all his troubles tracking Yoda down.
That’s not to say that Darth Vader wouldn’t be able to hold his own against Yoda for some time. If he could force Yoda into a duel, his immense strength would send Yoda to the backfoot. But as long as Yoda is wise enough to usehis strengths within the Forceto his advantage, as he would be wise enough to do, the contest wouldn’t go much farther.
