With EA recently announcing thatStar Wars Battlefront 2would be receiving its last batch of downloadable content, fans immediately began to wonder whether the studio was looking to develop a third entry in the major multiplayer shooter franchise. After all, the game, despite some early controversies with microtransactions, was fairly well-liked by its player base, especially after EA took the time to add lots more content and consistently updated events.
This all came to a head yesterday when a supposed listing for aStar Wars Battlefront 3popped up on Steam, with players immediately believing that the next entry in theStar Wars Battlefrontfranchise had just been inadvertently revealed. It seems that the listing was actually a dud, however, with the party behind the listing coming out and confirming that the leaked title was actually a fake.

For those who didn’t catch the news yesterday,Star Wars Battlefront 3was first found on SteamDB, which lists the thousands of titles that get uploaded to Steam every day. In turn, the application often turns up some fairly interesting results, with therecent Steam Summer Sale rumorscoming from the site. The listing in question used theBattlefrontname as well as the same artwork from the 2009 handheld adaptation of the series titledStar Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron.Naturally, many took this to mean that a third game in the franchise was on its way, yet, SteamDB itself came out to confirm that “This is fake and not official.”
Obviously, this is an unfortunate end of the story of fans of the franchise, many of which have been very vocal in conveying their sadness that the game’s lengthy run has finally come to an end.Players even started a fairly popular petition surrounding the final wave ofBattlefront 2content, claiming they’d be willing to pay for new updates if it meant EA would continue to work on the title and ship new characters, maps, and modes. Sadly, it seems like the game has simply run its course.
That being said, those who are yet to experience the title yet will be happy to know its currently free as part of PlayStation Plus' June lineup, meaning it will get something of a resurgence of new interest. Better yet, reports seem to indicate that a newStar Warstitle could be on the way sooner rather than later, with the rumored title beingStar WarsMaverick.Whatever this new game turns out to be, hopefully, it’ll more than make up forBattlefront 2’srecent conclusion.
