Marvel’s Spider-Man 2features more in-depth boss fights. Yuri Watanabe was an important character and ally to Spider-Man in Insomniac Games’ first title,Marvel’s Spider-Man. Now, afterThe City That Never Sleepsexpansion, Yuri went off the grid and indulged in vigilante antics that involved death and her own sense of justice. InMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, Yuri returns as the masked and murderous Wraith. It’s up to Spider-Man to try and quell her ruthless killings inSpider-Man 2with a great boss fight.
Wraith is on the hunt for The Flame and his cult. When players progress through this questline, they willreach the I Knew You Had It In You mission, where towards the end, Spider-Man will be forced to fight Yuri, and the boss fight with Wraith begins with some difficulty for players that don’t exactly have real-life spider-senses ora Spidey suit for themselves.
Wraith Phase One
Wraith will begin the boss fight by showcasing her dangerous weaponry. She will fight mainly with her weapon of choice, a set of scythes attached to chains which allows her to swing them at great distance, and slash from up close. Wraith is a fairly fast opponent, and here are a few tricks to help players finish her first phase with minimum scratches.
Wraith will often use her scythe tograb an object and throw it at Spider-Man. The best way toavoid this is simply by hitting the Circle Button to dodge these attacksand then pressing the Triangle Button to keep close to her, so she cannot use these throw moves.
Wraith will sometimes slash at Spider-Man, and then slide across the floor for a second swipe, and finish with a jump in which she will attack with her sharp weapons. The first two moves canbe parried or dodged, butthe third move must be parried, as indicated by the yellow ring around Wraith. After parrying this move, it’s best to wail into Wraith with some classic fist attacks toget Wraith’s health to around 50%, where she will begin a more aggressive approach against Spider-Man.
At 50% health, Wraith will become more aggressive in an attempt to take Spider-Man out. This is when players can become more aggressive in turn, and counter her attacks with a multitude of parries and punches. A highly efficient tactic is tolevel up Peter Parker’s Spider-Manso that players have access to his special abilities, accessed with L1 + Circle/Triangle/Square/X, as these abilities recharge over time.
Another great use of Spider-Man’s own arsenal is gadgets. The best gadgets to use against Wraith inSpider-Man 2involve the Web-Shooters and the Web Grabber. Both of these gadgets will stun Yuri, and she will have to free herself from the webs whilst players attack her.
Wraith Phase Two
After Wraith’s health bar is depleted to 0%, the second phase will begin, and this time players have to try and counter more moves under this vengeful vigilante’s arsenal. From the moment the fight begins, Wraith will show off her new move, which involves a blue circle around her head. This is calleda Crush attack, and it means that players must dodge, and cannot parry the attack. She can do this throughout the boss fight, and it involves her throwing some ceiling debris at Spider-Man. The best way toavoid this is by trying to stick close, and players can make sure Wraith can’t get distance by using Triangle to zip to her.
Once again, players need to keep close to her and apply pressure when it is safe to do so.Attack only when her move has been countered, or when there is an opening in her pattern. At 75% health,Yuri will enter a new phase of attack, in which she disorientates Spider-Man with some smoke bombs. During this mode, players just need to listen out for Wraith and watch for their Spider-Senses tododge her attacks. She will mainly try and hit Spider-Man from a distance with her chain. It’s not worth trying to punch her until Spider-Man’s vision goes back to normal.
Once vision returns, players are free to use their abilities and punches to get Yuri to 25% health, where she will once again make the player’s vision blurry. Althoughplayers can use the Triangle + Circle combo to deal a large amount of damageagainst Wraith, it’s best tosave the Focus meter for healing properties, just in case she gets the better of the player and causes a checkpoint restart.
It’s probably wise to do the Wraith boss fight when playersget the Black Suitso that they have a stronger arsenal of abilities to use, and so that they canuse the L3 + R3 Symbiote Surge modethat will see them deal stronger damage, and take less damage.
The boss fight will finish once Wraith’s health is at 0%. There’s no third phase, nor are there any more tricks up her sleeve, and players are free to progress onwards through themain story ofMarvel’s Spider-Man 2.
