When Billy Batson speaks the name of the Wizard, “Shazam,” he is struck with a thunderbolt and is transformed to his full potential, a superhero with magical powers. Not much is known about the Wizard, as in DC Comics and theShazam!film, he dies too quickly to provideall the answers Billy Batson seeks.
6Real Name Is Mamaragan
One of the largest reveals of DC Comics is when the Wizard, who was always known as Shazam, revealed himself to Billy Batson as Mamaragan. The name is famous for being the lightning Ancestral Being which speaks with thunder as his voice. This comes from the Australian Aboriginal mythology, specifically Gunwinggu.
Mamaragan is also known to ride storm clouds and throw lightning bolts at humans and trees. The character is theGod of Thunder, and in the DC Comics depiction, bolsters of impressive wisdom, courage, and the desire to seek out good.
5S.H.A.Z.A.M
Shazam may well be the name of the wizard and also the name of the superhero formerly known as Captain Marvel, but Shazam is an anagram for something else. In the comics and the film, Shazam stands for a god, demigod, and ancient warrior known in Greek pantheon mythology. This holds weight in the DC universe, consideringWonder Womanis the daughter of Zeus.
The powers that arebestowed to Billy Batsonare the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury. Altogether, this forges the word SHAZAM, the same phrase uttered by Billy Batson to unlock the potential of his physical heroics.
4Rock Of Eternity
The Rock of Eternity is a mysterious location andlair to the Wizard Shazam. It was created over 5,000 years ago from The Champion and was forged out of two large rock formations. These formations were equal parts Heaven and Hell to hold “Three Faces of Evil,” which was a dragon-like demon, as captive.
The location also imprisons the Seven Deadly Sins and houses many assortments of magic and ancient legacy. The Rock of Eternity is where the council of wizards resided before their death and now where the Shazam family holds their secret headquarters. Before Shazam and his family, there was the Wizard. The Wizard was the keeper and protector of the Rock of Eternity, for it housed such great and ancient power in need of containing and protecting from forces that would exist to threaten the sacred grounds.
3Assembled New Gods
The original gods that bestowed power intothe word “SHAZAM”were severed by the actions of Darkseid’s daughter, Grail the Godkiller. This was as part of her quest for the greatDarkseid Warcomic. However, thanks to the spirit of the Wizard, the powers of “SHAZAM” were able to continue through the New Gods.

The New Gods are a great piece of the universal and cosmic puzzle of DC Comics. They are the beings of New Genesis and Apokolips that exist within the Fourth World. These New Godsbestowed new power to Shazam, and one such god was the Wizard himself, who revealed himself as the god known as Mamaragan.
2Ancient Egyptian
In his early life, the Wizard was a humble native of the Middle Eastern kingdom of Kahndaq, the same kingdom that was soon to be ruled by Teth-Adam. The lands were brutal, and such depiction remains to be seen in a film. However, the trailer forBlack Adamindicates that audiences will witness such brutality.
The Wizard managed to escape the brutality of the country’s oppression and, at a later point, became a Thunder God of the Dreaming. This is where the Wizard’s journey truly began, as he sought to join the council of wizards, beings that controlled magic from the Rock of Eternity.
1Gave Black Adam Powers
The Wizard was set to bestow his powers onto a champion for Earth around 1200 BC. The Wizard sought a champion in Teth-Adam, a young prince of Kahndaq and the son of Ramses. Teth-Adam presented himself as fair and decent. However, Shazam’s powers were corrupted by the Wizard’s daughter, Blaze, who replaced “SHAZAM” with the power of Egyptian gods. Those being: Shu, Heru, Amon, Zehuti, Aton and Mehen. Therefore, Mighty-Adam’s powers were not drawn from the Wizard.
Despite being a hero in Egypt, it did not take long before his grief and hatred corrupted him into forcefully overthrowing the government of Khandaq. Countless died at his hand, and the Wizard trapped thenow dubbed Black Adam’s soul and powers within a powerful scarab. Burying both scarab and body, Black Adam remains in the tomb of Rameses II, where it remains unexcavated.
Shazam! Fury of the Godsis scheduled to premiere in theaters on July 08, 2025.
