The Derelict Citadel is the third biome the player must go through inReturnal. This biome is most certainly one of the more challenging areas in the game. Those who will traverse this level carelessly will immediately find themselves back at the beginning of the game. Like anywhere in thisrogue-like game, the player must be at the top of their game if they want to survive the Derelict Citadel.

The player will encounter a couple of new, dangerous opponents here. It’s also a very traversal-heavy place as Selene will be using her grapple hooks a lot in this level to reach the Broadcast Tower. The player will need to be extremely careful in this level because this is the last biome in the game’s first act, meaningif they die here, they’ll be sent back to the beginning ofthe first biome. To prevent this, they need to know a couple ofsurvival tipsthat are specific for this level.
8Know The New Enemies
Jumping into the Derelict Citadel, the player will immediately sense the dangers of this biome. The Derelict Citadel has a couple of enemies that playershave not yet encountered, presuming this is the first time they’ve reached the biome.
The first enemy Selene will encounter is a Broken Automaton, which will dash towards the player right away. Most of the new enemies in this biome are robotic in nature. The most common ones the player will encounter are the Drones, which fire homing missiles and damaging circles of energy. Arguably the toughest enemies in the biome are the Automatons. These large bipedal machines are highly durable.
7Know The Weak Spots
Almost every single enemy inReturnalhas a weak spot. Knowing this will make a monumental encounter so much more doable. In the Derelict Citadel, there are enemies that may seem very tough to beat, but knowing exactly where to hit them will bring them down so much faster.
For example, the Automatons can absorb a lot of damage without flinching. However, if Selene hits them in their weak spot, their headpiece, she will be able to bring them down much sooner. Drones also fall quicker if the player targets the center of their head.
6Move, Move, Move
Those who underestimate the importance of mobility inReturnalwill find themselves destroyed immediately. This tip is cemented even harder in the Derelict Citadel. This is a biome that demands the player to be as mobile as they can, and that’s not just because of how this entire biome is laid out.

Most of the enemies in this level either have projectiles that follow the player or will charge at the player to catch them in an explosion. The best way to survive the Derelict Citadel is to be as mobile as possible.
5The Traps
The final stage of the Derelict Citadel holds a lot of traps that will force the player to be more attentive. At this stage, the player will have to pass through rooms and narrow corridors engaged with laser traps.
These traps have patterns that can be easily memorized, so the player should take the time to observe them first before they attempt to cross the area. Dashes are also very useful in this situation. Although, the dash option will become disabled in certain situations.
4Maximize Selene’s Integrity Bar
The most obvious tip the player can follow to survive the Derelict Citadel biome is to simply increase their integrity bar. The more health a player has, the more chances they have of seeing things through to the end.
The player should take the time to explore the biome for silphiums and silphium resins. These green glowing things can be easily spotted, and they’re also marked with a green plus icon on the map. Picking up resins once the player’s health is full will increase the overall integrity bar.
3Find A Reconstructor
The Reconstructor is one of the most useful systems inReturnal. These things are found in rooms that are randomly generated in the game. As soon as a player finds one of these things, they might as well use it immediately. Before that, though, they need to verify they have at least six Ethers with them.

Reconstructors allow players to be respawned in that location instead of the beginning of the game after dying. Given that the Derelict Citadel is the third biome and dying here will send the player back to the very first one, the importance of a Reconstructor is gigantic.
2Bring An Astronaut Figurine
Astronaut Figurines give players a “second life” after their integrity bar drops to zero. This is one of the best items the player can carry in this game as a means of emergency. No matter how skillful they’ve gotten in this game, it’s still much safer to have this item as a contingency.
Astronaut Figurines will begin to spawn in the game after the player enters Selene’s house for the very first time. They can also be bought from fabricators.
1Defeating Nemesis
Once the player finally reaches the final stage of the Derelict Citadel, they will be met by Nemesis, the biome’s boss. Nemesis is one of the most thrillingbosses in the game. However, it can be insanely tough if the player doesn’t know what they’re doing. Conversely, it can also be very simple.
During the first two phases, the player simply needs to constantly move around to avoid the boss' attacks which can be easily done by constantly running left and right, all the while targeting the boss' weak spot, which is the eye located at the center of its body. The final phaseinvolves platformingto avoid Nemesis' attacks. The player will have gotten used to this mechanic of the game at this point.
