TheResident Evilseries is known for its horrific monsters, spine-tingling scares, and interesting characters. However, one aspect of the series that often goes overlooked is the interest in and attention paid to the manydifferent viruses that are featured acrossResident Evilgames. Most fans would likely be okay if the series was about trying to contain just one virus, like real viruses, new ones and mutations of older viruses are constantly being introduced in the various games.
One virus in particular that fans expected to hear more from in eitherResident Evil 7orResident Evil Villagewas the C-Virus. That said, when it didn’t make an appearance in either, some fans began to wonder what exactly happened to the C-Virus.

What is the C-Virus?
The C-Virus was introduced inResident Evil 6as a follow-up to the Umbrella Corporation’s T-Virus. The T-Virus is one of theResident Evilseries' most iconic, as it was used by Umbrella to turn regular civilians into the hordes of undead featured in many of its early titles, but the C-Virus was made by The Family following Umbrella’s shutdown, hoping to continue the corporation’s legacy. The C-Virus stands for Chrysalid Virus, and it essentially does the same thing as the T-Virus, but instead of turning its host into largely unintelligent zombies, those infected with the C-Virus retained intelligence and are able to transform and mutate into larger, more extreme monsters.
What Happened to the C-Virus?
At the start ofResident Evil 6,Jake Muller pairs up with Sherry Birkinto help create a vaccine for the newly introduced C-Virus. Unfortunately, before their vaccine could be made, the pair was captured. The rest of the game gives a handful of other priorities to Jake, but in the final moments of his story, he gives a sample of his blood to Sherry so the vaccine can be finished before he disappears.
Using his blood, a vaccine is made to combat the C-Virus, and proves to be extremely effective on those who haven’t previously been infected. Based on the text following the conclusion of Jake’s story, players are led to believe that the rollout of the vaccine is successful, and that a large majority of the world is protected with Anti-C. The virus was reportedly last seen in 2013 following theconclusion ofResident Evil 6.
Is the C-Virus Coming Back?
Because the C-Virus was the last major viral outbreak in theResident Evilseries, some fans assumed it might make a reappearance inResident Evil 7orResident Evil Village.Resident Evil 7ditched a lot of the previously establishedREcanon in favor of introducing new ideas like the Mold, but asRE8had a lot more connecting it to the main series, it seemed like the C-Virus could come back.
Some fans thought thatthe Cadou parasitewas a new version of the C-Virus when it was initially introduced inRE8, but the game later makes it clear that the two are different. The last time the C-Virus was brought up during Jake’s story inRE6alluded to the fact that the world may never be completely safe, so there’s a possibility it could reappear once more down the line. There are a handful of viruses that could make appearances inRE9if and when that eventually releases, but for now it seems like the C-Virus will remain dormant.
