Scary video games may not be to everyone’s taste, but with a lot to look forward to from both the AAA and indie scenes, there’s plenty of choice on offer for fans.
Since releasing on March 24,Resident Evil 4has been met with high praise, with the game being particularly noteworthy for its ability to retain what made the original so special while giving it a much-appreciated contemporary makeover. There are some who even feel it may have surpassed its predecessor in terms of quality. Even before the game launched, people had high hopes for it, thanks in part to the demo that gave players a tiny slice of things to come.

Now those expectations have been met as Capcom has announced that the remake ofResident Evil 4has been killing it in terms of sales, shifting more than three million units just two days after release. The report from the company goes on to say that, as of December 2022, the number of sales across the wholeREfranchise exceeds 135 million units. It’s certainly impressive to see that the series is still a force to be reckoned with, not just in horror, but in gaming in general.
Of course, many won’t be too surprised by this figure. Given that the remake was easily one of themost anticipated games of the year, perhaps of this whole generation for some, not many people expectedRE4to flop. When the series started back in 1996, the name “Resident Evil” quickly became synonymous with survival horror. It may not have been the originator of the genre, but it certainly popularized it and has influenced many other titles and studios since.
It’s hard to know exactlywhat’s next for theResident Evilbrand. While there are talks that a ninth installment is currently in development, the success ofRE4continues to show that Capcom is more than capable of bringing back classic entries, blending nostalgia with fresh ideas. This could leave the door open for a remake ofResident Evil 5, but that’s ultimately a decision only the developer can make.
