For 2020’sResident Evil 3, Capcom took the 1999 title and completely rebuilt it from the ground up. They modernized the visuals, controls, camera angles, and gameplay mechanics. The developers even controversiallycut plenty of content from the original. Overall, the 2020RE3is almost an entirely different game from the 1999 title.

The only thing really keeping the two games linked is their story and characters. Yet, both the protagonists and antagonists aren’t the exact same as their 1999 counterparts — Capcom has changed each character in some way for the remake.
10The Characters Look Different
It should come as no surprise that a 2020 remake of a 1999 game has very different-looking characters. However, it’s not just the extra pixels on their face that make them look distinct. Most of the main characters have different hair, clothing, and facial structure in the 2020 version.
The change in appearance is not something every fan appreciates, though. In fact, Jill’s outfit and Carlos’s hairstyle received particular scorn when Capcom first showed them in trailers.
9Nemesis Can Now Transform Zombies
In both games, the Nemesis is among the most terrifying and destructive creatures within Racoon City. And the Remake makes him extra dangerous by giving him some new abilities. Perhaps his most annoying power is the one where he injects zombies with a parasite.
The infected creatures' heads turn into glowing monsters, and they’re more powerful than regular zombies. For one, the parasite enemies take a lot more damage than the average foe. Plus, their bite is a lot more painful, and their whip attack is deadly also.
8A Change In Voice Actors
Capcom has never been afraid of changing voice actors in theResident Evilgames. Throughout the series, each main character has been voiced by multiple different people. So, of course, the company hired a whole new cast for 2020’sResident Evil 3.

In the English version, Nicole Tompkins plays Jill, Jeff Schine is Carlos, and Neil Newbon voices Nikolai. Regardless of what fans think about established characters changing voice actors, they can’t deny how good of a job the 2020 cast does for the remake.
7More Playtime As Carlos
Carlos Oliveira isa character that has only appeared in oneResident Eviltitle. And in the remake version, Capcom significantly increases his role within the game. Players control the guy during both the Police Station and Hospital sections of the story.
He’s also playable in the original, but it’s for a much shorter period. As Carlos is a popular figure, many fans liked their increased time playing as the smooth-talking hero. Although, Jill’s absence from the Police Station means Nemesis is nowhere to be found there either, which is a shame.
When it comes to members of the S.T.A.R.S Alpha team, Brad Vickers doesn’t rank highly. He doesn’t showcase incredible feats of heroism like Chris or Jill, nor does he display superhuman abilities like Wesker. In fact, Vickers is most known for dying.
In 1999’sRE3, he is murdered by the Nemesis in a memorable scene that showcases the monster’s power. However, in the remake, he’s taken down by zombies and later joins the horde of walking corpses. It’s fair to say that the original death has more impact.
5Tyrell Has A Much Bigger Role
Players of the original game would be forgiven for forgetting that Tyrell even appeared in the adventure. After all, the character only has a couple of scenes, and his sole purpose is to make the player suspicious of Nikolai.
The remake gives him a lot more to do as he supports both Carlos and Jill at different points of the game. And he even lives through most of the story, which is a shock for a secondary character in aResident Eviltitle.
4Nemesis’s Different Forms
During both games, the Nemesis goes through multiple transformations, yet not the same ones.

Whereas, the following are Nemesis’s different transformations in the remake:
The new versions of the antagonist look better due to improved graphics. However, the original game’s mutations feel more like a natural evolution of the beast.
3Jill Is More Self-Assured
Capcom changed Jill in several ways for the remake. Along with her physical appearance, the developers altered her personality too. In the 2020 version, she’s a lot more self-assured as she’s always willing to talk back to the likes of Nikolai, Mikhail, and Carlos. And she often responds to their remarks with witty one-liners.
Throughout the 1999 game, nobody would call her a pushover, but she’s more passive in conversations. She can even seem a bit naive at times, which doesn’t fit her badass heroine reputation.
2Nikolai Is Left To Die
Nikolai serves as the main human antagonist inResident Evil 3, and he’s a selfish traitor in both versions of the games. During the original title, he’s last seen in a helicopter either flying away or getting shot down by Jill.
Capcom gave him a different ending in the remake, though. Instead of escaping in the chopper, Jill and Carlos get in the vehicle without him. The villain then has to watch his adversaries fly away as he’s left in a Raccoon City that’s about to be destroyed.
1Barry Burton Doesn’t Appear
The original game has multiple different endings, some of which feature a cameo by Barry Burton. He turns up right at the end to pick up Jill and Carlos, saving them from Raccoon City’s destruction.
Burton doesn’t make any sort of appearance in the remake. Instead, Carlos flies both himself and Jill out of the dangerous city. Barry doesn’t feature too often in the games, so it’s unfortunate that he’s absent from this one. Even without the cameo, he still remains amongthe best secondary characters in the series.
