Unlike the more linear titles in thePokemonfranchise,Pokemon Scarlet and Violettakes part in a prestigious academy that players can revisit throughout their adventure, taking part in classes that mainly help new players of the franchise. From learning the language of their Pokemon companions to figuring out the exact percentage that will blast a critical hit, these classes are useful information for new players - and even for some seasoned Pokemaniacs, a good refresher on the game’s mechanics.
Besides taking part in exams tolearn about the new and old features of the game(and getting appropriately rewarded for doing well on the test), players can also get to know their teachers outside of lessons. Every teacher that a player is allowed to interact with has their own quest line, including some decent rewards at the end. Some of theselessons and rewards are more usefulthan others, so players should focus on certain lessons more than others.
Updated on July 30, 2025, by Rosie Sedgwick:The Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC packs, The Teal Mask, and The Indigo Disk are out now. Players who just picked up the game or those restarting a playthrough from scratch may be wondering what the appeal is of playing teacher’s pet after the main story is done. Each teacher provides some pretty nice rewards for helping them with their own problems, but some are nicer than others. Here’s an updated list of which classes are most important to attend—and which ones are more viable to play hooky with.
9Home Economics With Saguaro
It’s A Cute Present, At Least
While Saguaro may introduce the player to the new features inPokemon Scarlet and Violet, including making sandwiches at picnics, the item that is rewarded doesn’t equal the effort put in at all. After completing all his lessons, players will be tasked with fetching him a Sweet Herba Mystica, which can only beearned through level five raids, unlocked near the end of the game. Not only are the raids themselves difficult fights to beat, but the Sweet Herba Mystica are also incredibly rare, and therefore unlikely to be earned quickly.
Upon handing him this herb, he will give the player a Slowpoke cup, which may be cute but isn’t very helpful.
8Math Made Easy With Tyme
Everyone’s Favorite: Rock Shards
Many players may avoid math due to their disliking of it in real school. However, math inPokemonis incredibly useful when looking into the effectiveness of moves and combining that with other probabilities inside the game, such as how much more damage a critical hit could do, or the exact amount of extra damage that comes with effective type-matching in battle.
Beginner players may struggle to understand the math behind battles, but Tyme makes it easier to understand while also throwing in the odd trick question. However, upon finding out who (or what) has been following her around the school, players are only rewarded with fifty Rock-type Tera shards. These are good for changing a Pokemon’s Terastal typing, but Rock is weak to GrassandWater, so it’d be an easy battle to lose.
7Clavell, The Director Of The Academy
Big Nugget = Big Money
Although not particularly a teacher, Clavell still works at the school as the main person the teachers go to when they have concerns. He is the person who makes sure thatNaranja or Uva Academy, depending on what version of the game a player bought, stays up and running.
While no lesson will be learned by the player, they will be helping Clavell with learning about his (much younger) students, with one of his funniest bits of dialogue being him asking the player what “cheugy” means. Apart from this, Clavell is befriended by defeating the different Team Star bases, after which he finally gifts the player a Big Nugget which can be sold for a profit.
6Going Back In History With Raifort
Four Legendary Pokemon vs. A TM
With nine generations of the franchise, each region explored by players has had its own history and plenty of lore about its origins.Pokemon Scarlet and Violetis no different and boasts some impressive game-exclusive lore of its own with the latest Pokemon-populated land, Paldea.
In history class with Raifort, players learn about the first expeditions into the great crater that sits in the middle of Paldea, as well as the discovery of the Terastal phenomenon. to get closer to Raifort, she will task players withfinding the four legendary Pokemon of Paldea- which are arguably better than the TM for Nasty Plot she gives upon catching them all.
5Art With Hassel
Dragon Tera Shards For Terastal Fun
Unfortunately, players aren’t actually doing any art in Hassel’s class, but this doesn’t stop it from being interesting. Instead of drawing, players will be learning aboutScarlet and Violet’smainfeature: the Terastal phenomenon, which allows a Pokemon to be powered up through Tera shards and increases the power of certain moves.
Players learn about this and more through Hassel’s class and also earn themselves fifty Dragon Tera Shards, which can then be used to change the Tera type of their Pokemon.
4Learning Languages With Salvatore
Who Doesn’t Love A Free Pokemon?
The Language class inScarlet and Violetis arguably one of the most unnecessary classes that players can attempt to complete, though the easy-to-obtain extra experience candy is useful when trying to level up Pokemon fast.
Besides learning languages and attempting to understand a player’s Pokemon better, the saving grace of this class comes with Salvatore’s very useful reward: after helping the languages teacher care for a Pawmi that’s taken a liking to him, he rewards the player with a Galarian Meowth, which is useful when taking on the higher-level raids.
3Learning How To Battle With Dendra
Feed Pokemon Well For Boosted Attack
While Tyme teaches the player about the probability of moves hitting, Dendra’s job is to focus on the more obvious sides of battle:what types work well against othersand how to increase a Pokemon’s special attack or defense.
This can be incredibly helpful for a new player who may have never picked up aPokemontitle before. Outside of classes, players can help Dendra improve her sandwich-making skills (as they’re pretty disastrous when you get started), and upon helping her make an edible meal, she’ll reward the player with Protein that can improve a Pokemon’s attack stat.
2Miriam, The Academy Nurse
Max Revives Can Make Or Break A Battle
Similar to Clavell, Miriam isn’t a teacher in the academy yet, though, through the inspiring nature of the player, they push her to try once more to pass her teacher’s certification exam. This is a bond that gradually forms while the player is defeating gyms until she finally passes.
As a nurse, the gift she eventually gives the player is ten max revives. These are great for those difficult battles where a Pokemon has fainted and needs to be brought back into battle quickly with full health.
1Biology With Jacq
A Necessity For The Shiny Hunters
One of the best teachers available for players to interact with, as well as take part in his lessons, is the player’s homeroom and biology teacher, Jacq. In his lessons, players learn about breeding Pokemon in eggs and other biological elements.
Jacq created the Pokedex on the player’s Rotom phone, and he will ask the player to fill it with as many entries as they can. At thirty entries, he will give the player the TM False Swipe, which can make catching Pokemon easier. Upon completing the Pokdex and getting all four hundred entries, Jacq will give the player a Shiny Charm which will up their chances offinding shiny Pokemon in the wild.
