Summary
APokemonfan designed a Mega Evolution art concept for one of the original 151 Pokemon, the aquatic Starmie, and shared their handiwork on social media for other trainers to see. Following the post, thePokemonartist received compliments from fans, with some wondering why The Pokemon Company never gave Starmie a Mega form to begin with.
As the main battle gimmick of 2013’sPokemon X and Yfor the 3DS, Mega Evolution was a way to give past Pokemon a temporary boost in battle and grant them a new appearance. This battle gimmick sometimes changed the types and abilities of the Pokemon that Mega Evolved. In addition, Charizard and Mewtwo had multiple Mega forms to choose from. However, the last appearance of the Mega Evolution gimmick in the main series was in 2017’s PokemonUltra Sun and Ultra Moon. While somePokemonfans still remain hopeful thatMega Evolution to return in the future, one fan sought to fill in that gap with their art.

A Redditor andPokemonfan named Gregory_Gailur posted their art concept of what a potential Mega Evolution for Starmie would look like on the r/pokemon subreddit. This Mega form of Starmie retained the Pokemon’s purple body, but its red gem core was changed to resemble a pentagon and have five gemstones fan out into a star shape along the flat sides of the pentagon gem. The interior frame of Mega Starmie also had golden outlines that retained the star-shaped pattern. While the base form of Starmie looks like two starfish merged together, Mega Starmie was given a third starfish-like body. Though the OP did not indicate if their Mega Starmie would receive a new ability or moves, even the base form ofStarmie can be a useful addition to a Pokemon teamin some situations due to its versatility and access to defensive moves such as Reflect and Light Screen.
Starmie first debuted inPokemon Red and Bluefor the Game Boy. At the time, Pokemon trainers could only obtain Starmie by catching a Staryu and evolving it with a Water Stone. With a dual-type of Water and Psychic, Starmie is a fast special attacker with a base stat total of 520. This total puts Starmie in the same league as Pokemon such as Rotom, Flygon, and Aegislash. Though someKanto Pokemon are obtainable inPokemon Scarlet and Violet, both Staryu and Starmie have yet to appear in Paldea at the time of writing.
WithMega Evolution fan art continuing to make the rounds, it is clear thatPokemonfans still enjoy the battle gimmick. It remains to be seen if The Pokemon Company will do anything further with Mega Evolution in the future.
