Today, Activision officially announced thatCall of Duty: Modern Warfareis the most-playedCall of Dutyof the console generation. That makes it the most-playedCall of Dutysince 2012’sCall of Duty: Black Ops 2.Modern Warfaremarks a stunning return to form for a franchise that hit some road bumps over the past 7 years.
In a press release published byActivision, the publisher confirmed thatCall of Duty: Modern Warfareset new highs for the generation as measured over its first 50 days.Modern Warfareled in “Hours Played,” “Hours per Player,” and “Average Daily Players,” according to Activision. The company also claims thatModern Warfareis the top-selling “Premium Game” of 2019 and crossed $1 billion in “Worldwide Sell-Through.” While it’s notable that each achievement has been framed by Activision to sound unique, there’s no doubtModern Warfareis a return to form for the franchise in many ways.

Activision went on to provide some interesting statistics to go along withModern Warfare’s pronounced achievements. For example, most “Hours Played” translates to over 500,000 million multiplayer hours invested byModern Warfareplayers. In more gameplay-focused terms, it’s equivalent to nearly 300 million multiplayer matches played.
Call of Dutygeneral manager for Activision Byron Beede said, “It’s great to see the fan response to the hard work from our development teams led by Infinity Ward.” Beede also teased the latest free content release forCall of Duty: Modern Warfarein update 1.12, mentioning the new Vacant and Shipyard multiplayer maps, as well as the new Cranked multiplayer mode.
Despite what seems to be unending small controversies regardingCall of Duty: Modern Warfarewithin theCall of Dutycommunity, it’s inarguable that the game has been impressively received. And the game didn’t even need to release a battle royale mode. Next year will likely see a newCall of Dutygame released with a different studio leading the way as Infinity Ward rotates back onto its 3-year development schedule. But odds are the studio will be seriously considering staying focused onModern Warfarethrough the next generation.
