Mojang’s popular sandbox building gameMinecraftis preparing to change its random world generation drastically with the Caves and Cliffs update, adding in new mountain types and cave structures for players to explore. It was announced last week thatMinecraftdevelopers are splitting Caves and Cliffs, with world generation changes being reserved for the 2021 holiday season, but in the meantime one fan has offered up an interesting pitch for how Mojang could bring more diversity to other aspects of the game.

Minecraft’s creative community has been a major reason for its success over the years, with many either creating impressive structures and pop culture references or developing mods that change the game entirely. For example, one group ofMinecraftplayers are in the process of recreating the state of New Jerseyon a 1:1 scale.

The “River Update” imagined by YouTuber disruptive builds is simpler in scope, imagining what a Caves and Cliffs-styled overhaul could look like for different bodies of water. There are threeMinecraftriver systems debuted in the video: Streams that are one-to-two blocks wide, creeks that are three-to-four, and rivers that are five-to-twelve; all of which can be normal, lush (covered in flora), rocky, dried out, or frozen. Small and large waterfalls would each have “realistic” start and end points using rivers, and large waterfalls could hide caves.

Each of these ideas are presented well in disruptive builds' video, which uses shaders to make the water stand out asBanjo & Kazooiemusiccreates a whimsical vibe. After showcasing the ideas, the YouTuber presents time-lapse clips of the builds they put together by hand, and then highlights the process of creating their take on an “official"Minecraftupdate logo.

Different updates over the last few years have focused on improving locales for fans of the Microsoft-owned title, with Caves and Cliffs being just the latest venture.Minecraft’s Nether Update fleshed out the hellish other-worldlast year, for example, adding in a number of new biomes to explore and find resources in. Mojang has outfitted the game’s oceans in the past as well, so rivers would be a logical next step.

As far as confirmed future content goes, Mojang representatives said they will be saving archeology mechanics for sometime after Caves and Cliffs in last week’s update. The developer could also take additional ideas from disruptive builds, who has multiple update pitches based on deserts, coastlines, and more, while other players have continued to roll out projects like afunctioning arcade cabinet inMinecraft.

Minecraftis available now for Mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
