With Sony’s PlayStation Showcase coming up on May 24, many gamers are bracing for a host of new game announcements and trailers for titles slated for release over the next year. Among the games anticipated to appear at the showcase are titles likeMarvel’sSpider-Man 2,Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth,Death Stranding 2, and even therumoredMetal Gear Solidrevival. However, one game that was announced at a previous PlayStation presentation and could make a reappearance here is the remake of BioWare’s classic RPG,Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
The originalStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicreleased in 2003 and quickly became one of the most reveredStar Warsgames of all time. With the original release now 20 years old, fans have been clamoring for a modern remake of the title for some time, and things were looking good when Sony announced that aKOTORremake was in development for the PS5 during the 2021 PlayStation Showcase. However, since then the development has been tumultuous, to say the least. Sony now has the chance to reassure fans by providing an update on the game at the 2023 PlayStation Showcase.

The KOTOR Remake Could Appear at Sony’s 2023 PlayStation Showcase
Star Warsfans rejoiced when a remake of the highly-acclaimed BioWare RPG was announced to be receiving a remake. The teaser only showed a brief, rendered cinematic ofKOTOR’s Darth Revan, but it was enough to start the hype train rolling among fans who had been waiting years for another updated way to play this beloved title. However, the game has suffered a series of setbacks in the time since that have left its current status up in the air.
Development of the game was initially handled by Aspyr, a studio known primarily for porting games rather than developing original IPs. Although they had a history of portingKOTOR 1and 2, developing a complete remake of the game from the ground up was a different task entirely. Despite supposedly being in development for three years prior to its announcement, in the summer of 2022 it was reported thattheKOTOR Remakewas delayed indefinitelyafter Lucasfilm and Sony were said not to be happy with the development of the title thus far.
Without any concrete details about the game’s development, many fans have been left wondering what will become of this title and when it could possibly see a release, if ever. While the chances of the game showing up at the 2023 PlayStation Showcase are slim giventheKOTOR Remake’s apparent development hell, this upcoming showcase could be an opportunity to ease fans' concerns with even just a glimpse of gameplay footage to confirm the game is still in active development.
If nothing else, it would be great to see a State of Play down the line that addresses this issue further. Either way, it’s unfortunate that one of the most exciting announcements to come out of 2021’s PlayStation Showcase has had nearly all the wind taken out of its sails due to a rough development cycle. Fans shouldn’t hold their breath.
Giventhe original’sstatus as such a beloved classic,KOTOR’s remake delay may be for the bestif it results in a product that does the original the justice it deserves. Even though there is only a small chance it shows up at this year’s PlayStation Showcase, any sort of details about it would surely reignite the hype for this game that the initial announcement created.
