Marvel’s Spider-ManandSpider-Man 2developer Insomniac is on the lookout for a Lead Gameplay Programmer with experience in multiplayer titles.Marvel’s Spider-Man 2was first announced at the PlayStation Showcasein September 2021, and since then, fans have been wanting to find out more about the sequel to 2018’s popular open-world action title. So far, not much has been confirmed in terms of concrete details, and a lot of gamers have been speculating online about what may and may not feature in the game.

Something that has been hotly debated online is whether fans will see someco-op features inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2. Recently, with the release ofMarvel’s Spider-Manon PC, players digging through the files of that game discovered that at some point Insomniac may have planned for the 2018 game to have a form of multiplayer. To some, this indicated that Insomniac was gearing up for co-op inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2,and now a recent job posting may have given more evidence to back up that theory.

The job posting is advertised as a Lead Gameplay Programmer position, though, from reading into the requirements of the job role, it is clear Insomniac is looking for someone with experience in the development of multiplayer titles. Specifically, the position requires experience in building architecture and providing vision for “multiplayer game systems,” as well as familiarity with object replication that facilitates “great multiplayer features.” Insomniac doesn’t state that these multiplayer systems are being created forMarvel’s Spider-Man 2and instead refers to the game as an “exciting new project.”

While many have taken this to indicate multiplayer may be coming toMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, that isn’t the only upcoming title the developer is working on currently. Also revealed at the September 2021 PlayStation Showcase was aWolverinegame being worked on by Insomniac. It is predicted that theWolverinetitle will be releasing later thanSpider-Man 2, meaning that the team at Insomniac could be hiring lead positions to work further on that game. However, considering that both Miles Morales and Peter Parker will be Spider-Men inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, it makes the most immediate sense for that game to have some co-op functionality.

There is one factor that may prevent multiplayer from coming to the newSpider-Mangame, and that is an official statement from Insomniac. Shortly after the reveal of the game, Insominac confirmed thatMarvel’s Spider-Man 2would just be a single-player experience. This could be a case of a developer telling a small lie to save a big reveal for later, or it could point to another Insomniac franchise getting a multiplayer game.
