Summary

One of the many things thatManor Lordsgets right about medieval history is that villagers make use of the space behind their homes. Burgage Plots are amongthe first buildings that should be constructed inManor Lords, as they provide homes for new settlers, and families can then produce bonus goods viabackyard extensions. As long as players extend their Burgage Plots far enough back, they will be able to add a backyard extension. If there is a hammer under a roof symbol when constructing the plot, this condition has been met.

These backyard extensions fulfill a variety of needs, providing the village with a wider array of goods, including some which can not be produced elsewhere. All backyard extensions inManor Lordshave a cost and take time to construct, but some are only available for Level 2 Burgage Plots, and others can only be unlocked via specific development points. Lastly, while this list will detailthe best backyard extensions inManor Lords, the key to a thriving townis to eventually have a wide variety, as they all contribute something unique.

Manor Lords Blacksmith’s Workshop

2

5 Regional Wealth & 5 Planks

For those playingManor Lordson a difficulty mode with combat enabled, theBlacksmith’s Workshopis a must-build when it comes to Burgage Plot extensions. This is because it is the only way to produce melee weapons in the game, and without weapons, players will have no militia to defend the village orexpand their territory.

As different weapons can be forged in the Blacksmith’s Workshop, players will have to manually choose what they want in production, with different weapons being used by different unit types. This can be done in the General tab when players click on the Workshop.

Manor Lords Cobbler’s Workshop

Shoes from Leather

Out of the different workshops available as backyard extensions, theCobbler’s Workshopis easily one of the best. Cobblers make shoes out of leather from the Tannery, but to install a Cobbler’s Workshop, players must first have a Level 2 Burgage Plot.

What makes the production of shoes such a high priority once players have their village set up and running is that they are currently sold for a high price viaManor Lords’trade system. Shoes kept in the village also help keep the inhabitants happy, particularly those who live in higher-level houses.

Manor Lords Goat Shed

1

25 Regional Wealth

Hides

TheGoat Shedis one of the Level 1 backyard extensions, but in the very early stages, it isn’t as important as Chicken Coops or Vegetable Gardens. However, as hunting must be limited to let wild animals reproduce, Goat Sheds soon become a vital source of hides.

Hides can be turned into leather at a Tannery, which can, in turn, be sold via the trade network or worked into shoes by Cobblers. The good thing about Goat Sheds is that they don’t need much space, and even the smallest backyard extension will do.

Manor Lords Brewery Extension

Ale from Malt

Eventually, players will want to build a Tavern, which will serve ale and keep the residents happy. However, the process of producing ale is a long one, and the last step involves a crucial backyard extension. After players have grown barley in their fields, this can be turned into malt at a Malthouse. However, to brew ale from malt, players will need at least one house with aBrewery Extension.

As barley will likely only be grown in the second or third year, players don’t need to rush the Brewery Extension. In fact, it would be inefficient to build a brewery before malt is available, as the inhabitants of Level 2 extensions are automatically converted into artisans, meaningplayers cannot assign them to any work. Once malt is on the table, though, this extension should be of the utmost priority.

Manor Lords Chicken Coop

Eggs

Chicken Coopsare easily one of the best backyard extensions inManor Lords, especially in the early game. They are available right away, and chickens will start laying eggs that help feed the struggling population. As a unique food type, they also provide more diet variety, which will in turn raise the village’s approval rating.

Unlike Vegetable Gardens, the size of the plot doesn’t matter when it comes to yields, and the family doesn’t have to spend as much time in their backyard, as the chickens do all the hard work.

Manor Lords Vegetable Garden

15 Regional Wealth

Vegetables, with larger gardens producing bigger yields

Vegetable Gardensare an absolute necessity and arguably the best extension for Burgage Plots inManor Lords. For just 15 Regional Wealth, players can build gardens that will go on to help keep the village fed and happy. Vegetable Gardens should be planned in advance though, as their yield depends on how much space is available.

If players have already built a small Burgage Plot, it is better to use this land for something else like Chicken Coops. The only downside to large gardens that play a vital role in the food supply is that the residing family will have to spend longer planting and harvesting vegetables. To increase efficiency in this regard and in general, players shouldbuild lots of roadsbetween buildings.
