Hearthstoneis gearing up for its upcoming Titans expansion next month introducing 145 new cards, new Keywords, and a unique Titan card for each class. Ahead of the expansion’s release, Game Rant was given a first look at the Spell School Group of cards forHearthstone’s Mage class, a set of cards that enable Mages to use normally inaccessible spells with some potentially devastating effects.
Three cards from the Spell School Group were initially revealed during the expansion’s announcement: Molten Rune, Wisdom of Norgannon, and Inquisitive Creation. Rounding out the set from Game Rant are three previously unseen cards: Discovery of Magic, Elemental Inspiration, and Sif. Typical for Mages, the group is centered around casting spells but encourages a more chaotic multi-school playstyle rather than sticking to the synergies from within one particular school.

Discovery of Magic
Discovery of Magic is a pivotal card for the playstyle that the Spell School Group offers to Mages, and its effectiveness will become apparent when paired with other cards from this set. The card will allow Mages to pull a spell from any school they haven’t used during the game, so it’s advisable for Mages to hold onto this card until after they’ve used arcane, fire, and frost spells in order to ensure that they’ll get a spell from another class. With this card, Mages can throw their opponents for a loop with unexpected spell casts normally reserved forHearthstone’s Warlock classor even Demon Hunters. The low cost of one mana and its intended use for later turns means it should fit into some strong combos in the mid-to-late game.
Elemental Inspiration
Elemental Inspiration is a powerful high-cost card that pairs exceptionally well with Discovery of Magic. For each spell school that’s been used, Elemental Inspiration will summon a 4/5 Vortex elemental with a random bonus effect. Possible effects include Divine Shield, Taunt, Rush, Windfury, Stealth, Poisonous, Lifesteal, and Reborn. Mages that have managed to cast from many different schools during the game can instantly gain control of the board, putting pressure on the opponent and givingHearthstone’s Magebreathing room for even more spell casting.
Sif
Sif is the Legendary card for the Spell School Group, once again encouraging Mages to utilize as many schools as possible in order to get the most out of her card. For each school the Mage has cast, Sif gains +1 spell damage. In the latter stages of the game when the Mage has gone through a significant number of schools, Sif can be a game-ender. At a cost of six mana, there’s just enough room in the latter turns to drop a spell or two in combination with her to hopefully land a killing blow.World of Warcraftplayers may recognize Sif fromWrath of the Lich King’s Ulduar raid, where Yogg-Saron’s impersonation of Sif bombards players with frost spells during the Thorim boss fight.
Overall, these cards are somewhat high-risk in that they are most useful in the late game, so Mages can’t rely on a rush victory early in the match. However, since most of the power from these cards is contingent on the number of schools used rather than other factors like the number of characters on the board, they’ll be very reliable plays for multi-school Mages who can hold out long enough. It looks to be a fun playstyle thanks to the unpredictable nature of the random spell schools and Elemental Vortexes, making each game play out a bit differently even with the same set of cards. It’ll be interesting to see how the cards fromHearthstone’s Titans expansionshake up the other classes.
