Rulers of the Surface
The main enemy ofGurren Lagannis the Beastmen, an empire of genetically engineered animal-human hybrids who rule the post-apocalyptic Earth with an iron first. Simon and Kamina join up with the human resistance, determined to overthrow the Beastmen so all humans can be free to live on the surface. However, Kamina’s idealism makes him plenty of enemies among the Beastmen, including his arch-nemesis Viral.
Viral is a low-level officer of the Beastmen, but what he lacks in prestige he makes up for in honor. He’s determined to destroyKamina in order to win the favor of the Spiral King and his Four Generals, the rulers of the Beastmen’s empire. But instead, Viral faces defeat after defeat, earning only shame and humiliation. Yet despite his miserable luck, Viral continues to fight against the heroes of Team Gurren, quickly coming to see Kamina as a worthy opponent. However, Kamina is tragically killed by Viral’s superior, the brutish General Thymilph, before Viral gets a chance to fight a final duel with his nemesis.
After Kamina’s death, Simon defeats the Four Generals one by one before finally turning his attention to Spiral King himself, Lordgenome. Despite reigning over the Beastmen, Lordgenome is human — in fact, he created the entire Beastmen racewith his scientific prowess.Lordgenome is initially characterized as a cold and callous tyrant who treats his subjects as disposable: he even exiled his own daughter Nia for becoming too curious for his liking. Yet when Nia rebukes her father’s cruelty, Lordgenome claims that his tyranny is all for humanity’s own good. “This world that I have created is the only path to ensure humanity’s survival,” he claims.
During his battle with Simon and Nia, Lordgenome — piloting Lazengann, a dark mirror of Simon’s own Gurren Lagann mecha — Lordgenome warns that Simon’s idealism will lead humanity down the path to destruction. “There was once a man who thought as you do, also unaware his actions would ensure humanity’s extinction,” he cryptically tells Simon. But as Simon and Nia’s willpowerproves equal to his own,Lordgenome begins to laugh. His dispassionate demeanor gives way to a passionate fighting spirit, yet Lordgenome’s renewed resolve isn’t enough to break Simon’s spirit. Lordgenome dies by Simon’s hand, using his last words to warn that a much greater threat lies in wait.
Absolute Despair
Seven years after the fall of Lordgenome’s empire, humanity has reclaimed the surface world. But when the human population reaches one million, the new enemy Lordgenome warned of emerges: the Anti-Spiral, an alien hive mind bent on humanity’s destruction. The Anti-Spiral, possessing Nia’s body, appears before Simon and reveals the truth behind Lordgenome’s actions. Spiral Power — the energy born from humanity’s willpower, which allows them topilot the series’ mecha— is incredibly unstable, and threatens to destroy the entire universe if overused, creating a singularity known as the Spiral Nemesis.
Lordgenome was once a hero like Simon who fought to save Earth from the Anti-Spiral, but fell into despair when it told him the truth of the Spiral Nemesis. So in order to protect humanity from extinction, Lordgenome cut a deal with the Anti-Spiral. He would regulate humanity’s population, forcing them underground to keep them weak and divided. Lordgenome never wanted to become a tyrant, but he saw ruling humanity through fear as the only way to save humanity from extinction. Once again, the theme of freedom vs. order asserts itself.
Withthe seemingly unstoppable threatof the Anti-Spiral looming over humanity, all seems to be lost. Simon remains determined to fight the Anti-Spiral despite their warnings, but his more analytical best friend Rossiu believes that resisting any further would only cause more suffering. Rossiu betrays Simon, branding him a war criminal and sentencing him to execution, while he plans to save as many humans as possible by fleeing into space. Only a fraction of humanity would survive, but Rossiu sees no other viable option.
However, when Rossiu’s evacuation plan is foiled by the Anti-Spiral, Simon (now working together with Viral after befriending him in prison) saves the day using his usual optimistic determination. Rossiu realizes that his cynicismalmost led him to doomall of humanity, making him no better than Lordgenome — after all, both were heroes who gave into despair, becoming convinced that ruthless utilitarianism was the only way to save humanity. But thanks to Simon’s compassion, the spark of hope awakens in Rossiu once again.
To Fight The Unbeatable Foe
It’s eventually revealed that the Anti-Spiral was once a race of Spiral lifeforms like humanity, who sealed their bodies away in stasis after learning of the Spiral Nemesis. They united their minds into a single consciousness, creating the Anti-Spiral, who began its twisted scheme to save the universe by either conquering or killing all other Spiral races. The Anti-Spiral’sevil is born not from malice, but from the resignation that no better option exists. The Anti-Spiral is just another victim of the same despair it inflicts on its victims — it resorts to such cruel methods because it’s afraid of risking armageddon by trying the alternative.
Gurren Lagannlinks fear and despair with order and control, just as it links hope and determination with freedom and rebellion. Simon and his allies refuse to give into fear and take the easy way out, instead daring to believe that there’s a better future for humanity. But despite its anger towards humanity’s stubborn idealism, the Anti-Spiral faces its destruction by Simon with humble acceptance. “If this is how it must be,protect the universe at allcosts,” it asks Simon.
Ultimately, none ofGurren Lagann’s major antagonists are pure evil. The Anti-Spiral, Lordgenome, and Rossiu all want to save everyone they can, just like Simon. But without Simon’s sense of hope, they believe peace is only possible through sacrifice and control. Even so, they aren’t beyond saving: Rossiu, Viral, and even a revived Lordgenome all become heroes in the end. Even the Anti-Spiral, the incarnation of tyranny and terror, is just another misguided savior. The fact that a show as over-the-top asGurren Laganncan make seemingly two-dimensional villains feel so humanized is atestament to its optimistic worldview— and its ability to create some of the most memorable characters in anime history.
