WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD

After the events ofGod of War Ragnarok, where the story is headed next is a complete mystery (outside Atreus' pursuit of the giants). The bittersweet ending ofRagnaroksaw Kratos and his son Atreus part ways, and this split has raised a variety of questions about what a new chapter would hold for many of the game’s characters. After winning the battle of Ragnarok and seeminglydefeating the god Odin, there are a variety of directions the story could go, and one of the game’s biggest twists set a high bar for every direction.

Althoughthe nextGod of Warwill possibly move on to new pantheons, there is still plenty of exploration to be done within the Norse realm. Atreus may be off searching for the remaining Giants, but Kratos is still planted in the Norse realm. The aftermath ofRagnarok’s climactic events will need to be addressed. While Atreus may venture into new realms in the next game, Kratos will probably help rebuild the Norse realm stronger than ever, but either has to contend with one storytelling element.

God of War Ragnarok’s Big Twist Raises the Bar for the Next Game

InGod of War Ragnarok, the fact that Tyr was actually Odin in disguise was a jaw-dropping moment in the game’s story. In an attempt to thwart the plans of Kratos and his companions, Odin takes the disguise of Tyr and works to influence the group’s decisions in order to keep them from succeeding in their quest. As the god of war in Norse mythology, Tyr was an important component in Kratos and Atreus' plans, so the reveal that Tyr was not actually who he presented himself as gave many players a huge shock.

However, this leaves the nextGod of Wargame in a tricky spot. Such a major twist can only be executed one time, and this leaves an incredibly high bar for the next chapter to reach. This also presents the question of what role will the actual Tyr play in the nextGod of War. After completing the main story ofRagnarok, players will be able tofind the real Tyr in Niflheimand will continue to run into him in other realms following this discovery. Although encountering the real Tyr doesn’t give any major hints as to what the nextGod of Warwill entail, it does imply that he could show up again in the next chapter.

Kratos and Tyr fighting side by side as gods of war would be an incredible event to witness, but the twist of Odin disguising himself as Tyr makes it difficult to envision what role the actual Tyr could play in the next game. With Odin officially dead, the Norse realm is now stuck without a major villain, and it’s a little disappointing to realize that Tyr’s powers as a god of war won’t be seen used against the All-Father. Using Tyr as a major plot twist was a great moment inRagnarok, but it leaves the towering Norse god without a clear place in the next chapter of the story.

The nextGod of Warcould see Tyr be a great companion for Kratos against whatever foe they encounter next, but it would have been great to see Tyr facing Odin head to head.Ragnarok’s Tyr twist was one of the most defining moments of the game, but the nextGod of Warnow has the daunting challenge of finding a way to shock players in an even greater way. There’s no telling whatthe next chapter ofGod of Warwill hold, but there’s now a god-sized hole that Tyr will somehow have to fill.

God of War Ragnarokis available on PS4 and PS5.
