From the very beginning, trainer battles in thePokemonseries have been a dime a dozen. From legitimate trainers to criminal syndicate goons, players can expect to encounter plenty of mandatory fights during their travels through theSinnoh region, but a recent video shows one Galactic Grunt inPokemon Brilliant DiamondandShining Pearlisn’t eager to be one of them.
The recent Switch remakes,Pokemon Brilliant DiamondandShining Pearlsend players back to face Team Galactic, which is wreaking havoc. Typically, anyone encountering a Team Galactic member will be forced to face them in a Pokemon battle, but one player found themselves having to work to actually get the encounter to happen.

As shared on thePokemonsubreddit, a brief video shows the attempted encounter between the trainer andGalactic Grunt. After turning a corner and spotting the Grunt, the player tries to run into his line of sight, which should immediately trigger a Pokemon battle. However, as soon as the player is standing in front of him, he turns, facing away. While it’s not uncommon for certain NPCs to rotate to spot incoming players from any direction, this one was persistent in doing the opposite. As the player circles the Galactic Grunt, he continuously turns away, moves, and seemingly does everything he can to avoid noticing the player.
Once the player moved into the space below the Grunt, the iconic ‘!’ appears above his head and the battle begins. From this point on the fight apparently was normal, though at least one other user has claimed to have experienced the same issue with the exact same Galactic Grunt.
Of course, players can trigger a fight immediately with NPCs like these by approaching them and trying to talk to them. It’s not necessary to enter their line of sight if the player just wants to get the fight over with. Even so, the encounter is amusing, as though the Galactic Grunt is dead set against actually having to fight. Those in the post’s comments pointed out that he’s probably got more sense than most, as the player character inPokemongames is generally ready to steamroll enemies like these with fullrosters of powerful Pokemonand higher levels than what their low-ranking competitors can offer.
Though this odd encounter likely boils down to timing and luck,Pokemon Brilliant DiamondandShining Pearlhave had glitches and bugs reported since their release. While some of them have been a major problem for players, others have produced similarly amusing moments, like when one trainer ended uprunning circles around champion Cynthiaduring what was supposed to be a cutscene.
