Summary

Bonnie the Rabbit, one of the four original animatronics inFive Nights at Freddy’s, made a buzz due to fans being torn about whether he is blue or purple. Even FNAF designer Robert Bennet admitted he got Bonnie’s color wrong and only got it right after theFNAFgame creator confirmed it.

Bonnie is an animatronic rabbit at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and the guitarist in Freddy’s band. He is one of the primary antagonists in theFive Nights at Freddy’sseries—and one of the original four animatronics possessed by the children murdered by William Afton. ManyFive Nights at Freddy’sfans got Bonnie’s color wrong, thinking he was purple, including Bennet. However, in the November 2023 issue ofSFX Magazine, Bennet admitted that he initially “made Bonnie purple.” However, when he clarified the animatronic’s hue withFNAFgame creator Scott Cawthon, the latter explained that “Bonnie is blue,” ending the debate over the animatronic’s correct shade. For Bennet’s end, it was a lot of back-and-forth work to nail down Bonnie’s shade.

However, even if Bennet got Bonnie’s color wrong the first time he designed the animatronics, the production designer told the magazine that Cawthon was happy with the overall look when he visited the set a week before they started filming. TheFive Nights at Freddy’screatorwas reportedly grateful for their works and even exclaimed, “This is exactly what I wanted them to look like.” It wasn’t an easy job for Bennet to redo the design, but after seeing Cawthon’s reaction, he felt that all of their efforts were worthwhile.

The confusion behind Bonnie’s correct color could be due to the lighting when the firstFive Nights at Freddy’sgame was released, giving the character a purple-like color.FNAFfans surely noticed that all the plushies and toys linked to the Rabbit animatronic were purple. Even those who loved to wear Bonnie’s ear in cosplay used lavender.

However, it was also noticeable that Bonnie and the other bunny animatronics rocked a more bluish hue after the first design. Even Glamrock Bonnie fromFive Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breachhad a noticeable light blue complexion. No matter Bonnie’s color, he remains the scariest animatronic in the franchise, probably due to his lack of eyebrows giving him a mysterious and uncanny vibe. Many gamers and fans find Bonnie the Rabbit terrifying, and that’s understandable because even theFNAFcreator, Scott Cawthon, admitted that Bonnie gave him nightmares.
