Realizing that the ghouls inFallout 4weren’t creepy looking enough, someone has decided to make them look even more hideous by releasing a mod for the Bethesda RPG. While there are somescary open-world post-apocalyptic gamesout there, theFalloutfranchise is not often counted among them. Sure, there are pretty unsettling things about them, such as the Deathclaws or the terrifying implications of a nuclear war, but there’s not a constant barrage of horrifying elements. Even many of the ghouls, for the most part, are friendly and just another part of the world.
Ghouls have been a staple in theFalloutfranchise, appearing in every installment since the first game came out in the late 90s. They are, if anything, a reminder of the effects of obscene amounts of radiation exposure, and while many of them are just normal citizens trying to get on with life, there are the more feral ones that players need to watch out for. In general, most people familiar with the series have grown accustomed to seeing them around. They may be a bit creepy looking at first, but those feelings soon subside, even when it comes to the vicious ones out in the wild.

However, there’s been an attempt to inject a more “ghoulish” aesthetic into the feral ghouls ofFallout 4. As spotted by DSO Gaming, Nexus Mods user BlackWolf24 recently released a mod for the game that retextures these antagonistic foes from the 2015 game. Simply called “Enhanced Feral Ghouls,” the mod gives a much more detailed look to the irradiated creatures from the vanilla release and both DLCs. It changes the looks for all the feral ghouls in the game, so doesn’t affect the more human-esque ones, with the results being more interesting-looking though somewhat more horrifying creatures.
It’s these feral foes that players need to be more careful around, as they often attack in packs and are quick on their feet. Seeing one of BlackWolf24’s ferals on the move could force players to be a lot more cautious around these creepier looking ones. But it’s not all doom and gloom. The game still maintains its brightly colored visuals and even some humor. In fact, just recently someone showedwhat Shrek would look like inFallout 4, with amusing results.
WithBethesda confirmingFallout 5last year, the series is continuing unabated. No doubt the next installment will see the return of the ghouls, and with any luck, there will be plenty of people in the modding community more than happy to keep pumping out custom content for many years to come.
Fallout 4is available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions in development.
