The world of live-service online multiplayer games is a cramped one, but it seems to be getting less crowded every day. While staples likeFortnite,Apex Legends, andCall of Duty: Warzoneare likely here to stay for a while yet, smaller live-service games are starting to drop like flies.Knockout CityandRumbleverseare two recent examples of this trend, and though they were both good games, the amount of time and effort required to continually develop them is simply not worth the return on investment. But somehow, through it all,Fall Guyshas managed to endure.

Released all the way back in August 2020, almost three years ago now,Fall Guysis a live-service multiplayer gamethat sees players stumble their way through a series of obstacle courses in a slightly less violent take on the battle royale formula. Despite recent live-service closures,Fall Guysis still kicking, and its upcoming Season 4 update might finally bring a mode that cementsFall Guys' longevity for good.

Fall Guys' New Creative Mode Could Be Exactly What the Game Needs Right Now

Fall Guys' continued success is nothing short of pure dedication on the developer’s part. WhenFall Guysfirst released in August 2020, it was quickly propelled to fame due to its addictive core gameplay loop, and the absurd, accessible nature of its presentation. On top of that,Fall Guysalso launched forfree on PS Plus, meaning that PlayStation users had no excuse not to try the game.

Fall Guysmanaged to ride this initial wave of hype for quite some time, but eventually, as is the case with all modern games, the player-count soon started to plummet. But rather than let its game get swept to the side, developer Mediatonictook swift action, and announced ports of the game were coming to Xbox consoles and Nintendo Switch. Though these were delayed, Mediatonic made another smart decision, and announced thatFall Guyswould be shifting to a free-to-play model. Mediatonic has managed to do what very few live-service developers can, and keep its game alive by continuing to adapt to the gaming space around it.

That being said,Fall Guyshas seen better days. On Steam Charts,Fall Guyscurrently has a 24-hour peak player-count of 2542, which is solid but does pale in comparison to its all-time peak of 172,026. Of course, this figure could be inaccurate, and it only relates to those playing on Steam, but it seems fair to say thatFall Guys' player-count could be a lot better across the board, and that’s where the newly announced Season 4 update comes in.

Taking a page out ofFortnite’s playbook,Fall Guyshas just announced a new Creative Construction modeheading to the game in Season 4, which launches on May 10. This Creative Construction mode will finally let players create their very ownFall Guysobstacle courses. From the few details released so far, it seems as though this new mode will be just as accessible as the rest of the game, with a variety of easy-to-learn tools at the player’s disposal that allow them to place, edit, and test out their creations in real-time. Once completed, players can share their customFall Guyscourses with their friends via a unique Share Code, similar toSuper Mario Maker. Additionally, Mediatonic will be cultivating a brand-new playlist based solely on the best user-created courses. This simple tool has the potential to giveFall Guysanother big boost in popularity, and that boost could last for quite some time.

Fall Guysis available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
