New characters have been introduced inHogwarts Legacythat have roots beyond the famous European Wizarding Schools, creating intrigue around what other magical academies may exist in the big wide world.

Of the eleven great wizarding schools, the author has yet to reveal details about four mystical institutions; however, the bounds of magic are evidently not limited to the schools featured in theHarry Potterbooks. The Wizarding World has grown to accommodate most of the globe since Harry’s glory days, and each group of prospective witches and wizards must learn their skills from somewhere.
8The Cryptic Koldovstoretz
Strangely enough,Koldovstoretzis the only school on this list that has not received an officialWizarding World(previouslyPottermore) entry, so speculations run rampant regarding thisRussianwizarding academy.
This secretive school was one of the few institutions to participate in the Wizarding Schools Potions Championship (according toFantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore), suggesting that Koldovstoretz produces proficient Potions Masters. They have also notably taken their own unique approach to Quidditch gameplay; instead of maneuvering through the sky on aerodynamic broomsticks, the Koldovstoretz students opt to use entire trees, roots, and all, assumedly making Quidditch matches much more interesting!

7The Darkness of Durmstrang
Durmstrang(pronouncedDoorm - strang) is especially secretive about its location, although most believe that the grounds are situated in theNorthmost parts of Europe, and, considering its giant, iconic lake, the grounds may possibly be adjacent to the grandPeipus Lake.Durmstrang (which was founded by a Bulgarianwitchcalled Nerida Vulchanova) is misrepresented in theHarry Pottermovies as being a boys-only institution and has a terrible reputation for being lenient towards Dark Arts practices, which is arguably unwarranted.
Durmstrang’s dishonor boils down to the actions of just two teachers and one pupil (in strong contrast to the numerous skeletons hidden inHogwarts' closets!) while the fact that they don’t accept any Muggle-born students doesn’t help their cause. However, considering that Grindelwald was expelled for dabbling in the Dark Arts is surely a testament that evil intentionsare not acceptable by Durmstrangstandards.

6The Curiosities of Castelobruxo
This Brazillian-basedmagical school has been aroundfor over a century and can be found (by non-Muggles, only) within the heart of theAmazon, giving the appearance of being a mighty golden rock, which is possiblyPedra Furada,in disguise.Castelobruxo(pronouncedCass - tell - o - broo - shoo) takes advantage of its gorgeous and alluring scenery by focusing its studies on the local flora, fauna, and wildlife, producing many great Herbologists and Magiczooligists in the process.

Castelobruxo is particularly friendly towards visiting witches and wizards and even offers a multitude of exchange programs (which Bill Weasley was once very keen to enroll in, but alas, finances were not in his favor.) The students' bright green attire assumedly helps them blend in with their surroundings when exploring the forest, making them less likely to disturb (or get eaten by) whichever creature they may be studying.
5The Wonders of Uagadou
This African titan is unrivaled in size compared to other wizarding institutes and has been standing for over a thousand years.Uagadou(pronounced “Wag - a - doo”) vaguely declares that it is stationed in the‘Mountains of the Moon,’most likely referring to theRuwenzori RangeofUganda, which shares the same nickname. Uagadou students practice the more mystical side of magic, specializing in Astronomy and Alchemy, while most are also renowned Animagi experts.
History dictates thatthe wand originated in Europe,which didn’t stop Africans from practicing magic; they simply take a morehands-on approach to spellcasting. Uagadou also has a unique selection process that occurs while the lucky recipient is asleep and they are visited by a Dream Messenger, who leaves a stone trinket behind to confirm their enrollment.
4Beautiful Beauxbatons
Despite what theHarry Pottermovies suggest,Beauxbatons(pronouncedBo - batton)is not a girls-only academy, although it does tend to boast significantly stunning students, who perfectly match the picturesque setting of the school (believed to be somewhere betweenFrance and Spain, in thePyreneesmountain range.) Furthermore, having taken home sixty-two trophies, Beauxbatons is arguably Hogwarts' biggest competition in the Triwizard Tournament, as they are only one win behind the Scottish school.

As rumor has it,Beauxbatons has alchemy to thankfor its extravagant splendor, thanks to their prominent past students, Nicolas and Perenelle Flamel; a “high school” romance that spanned across many lifetimes. The stunning fountain erected in Beauxbatons' bounds allegedly has healing properties that also enhance one’s appearance; which would explain the abundance of attractive students on this school’s roster.
3The Magic of Mahoutokoro
Perhaps the oldest wizarding school around,Mahoutokoro(pronouncedMah - hoh - toh - koh - roh) has remained a mystery by hiding itself upon the volcanic island ofMinami Iwo Jimaand decorating its facades with ornamental white-colored Nephrite (which helps the building blend into the mist.) Students begin their schooling career much earlier than the Hogwarts kids, starting day classes from the age of seven and taking full-time residence at the yamajiro from eleven years old onwards.
Mahoutokoro’s distinctive robes change color depending on the user, usually indicating their level of education along a gradient from rosy pink to gilded gold. A white robe, however, signifies criminal activity and will lead to the immediate expulsion of said student (such as in Kazuhiro Shiratori’s case inHogwarts Legacy.) On a more positive note, the Japanese are highly skilled Quidditch players, often training in treacherous conditions, which makes “normal” matches a breeze, according to the Toyohashi Tengu champions.
2The Incredible Ilvermorny
The interest inIlvermornyhas gained great momentum since theFantastic Beastsfranchise joined theHarry Potterlore, givingNorth Americanssome much-needed representation in the process. Situated in the peeks ofMount Greylock in western Massachusetts,Ilvermorny has a thick history,essentially starting out as a homeschooling system for neglected kids with magical potential, founded by a No-Maj named James Steward and his wife, Isolt Sayre, a descendant of Salazar Slytherin.

Much like Hogwarts, learners are grouped into four individual houses, namely: Horned Serpent, Wampus, Thunderbird, and Pukwudgie, although their selection process differs considerably. Newcomers must step on an enchanted Gordian Knot at the school’s entrance, and the four observant wooden statues react accordingly, indicating to which house one belongs.

As most fans are aware, theHogwartscastle is located inScotland, not too far from Dufftown, adorned with layers of spells to avert the Muggles' wandering eyes. The Book of Admittance and the Quill of Acceptance have been revealed as the responsible parties for Hogwarts' selection process, removing human error from the equation by allowing a judgmental book and a trigger-happy quill to decide the fates of prospective witches and wizards.
There isnary a dull moment within the halls of Hogwarts,with its ghost population, enchanted staircases, chatty portraits, Forbidden Forest, and more; it’s probably safe to say that only those watching the Marauder’s Map have a reliable understanding of Hogwarts' secrets. After all the chaos, McGonagall finally stepped into the headmistress position as Dumbledore’s rightful successor, with old-timers like Neville Longbottom, Madam Hooch, and Hagrid filling other staff roles. A “Famous Scholars” list for past Hogwarts students could go on for days, as the majority ofHarry Pottercharacters technically apply; so simply pick some personal favorites!
