Epic Games has continued to deliver free games toEpic Games Storeusers week after week, as it promised to do going all the way back to the PC gaming storefront’s launch. Each weekEpic Game Storeusers log into the storefront not only to acquire the latest free games but also to see what will be offered next. This week, Epic Games had a surprise for EGS users. Instead of the typical teaser image confirming the next game, there’s an image of a safe to be unlocked and the label “Mystery Game.”

Mystery games aren’t necessarily uncommon for Epic Games Store free game offerings, but they don’t usually get snuck into regularly scheduled weekly deliveries. Rather, they tend to be used for holiday or seasonal events or sales on the EGS. For example, theChristmas 15 Days of Free Gamesevent hides each game until they’re available, turning the free games into presents for users to unwrap. There’s no apparent occasion to explain the EGS' upcoming mystery game, however.

Mystery games are generally exciting due to their nature, but this mystery game is particularly intriguing. The upcoming mystery game will be replacing three games that unlocked on EGS just recently. The three games arePrey,Jotun Valhalla Edition, andRedout Enhanced Edition, making this week particularly high-value. There will be a lot of attention placed on the game to follow, with EGS users hoping for something even more special than the current week.

There are a variety of reasons thatEpic Gamesdecided to make the new game a secret, though. While EGS users will be hoping that it’s a new, exciting game, or something bigger than the trio of games released this week, that may not be the case. It could be that Epic doesn’t know what game it will release next week yet. It could also mean that Epic doesn’t want next week’s game to face additional scrutiny due to this week’s loaded line-up of free games.

Regardless of what the mystery game is, it’s arriving next week without delay.Jotun Valhalla Edition,Prey, andRedout Enhanced Editionwill remain available from now through May 19 at 8:00 AM PT. That’s when the new mystery game will be revealed and can be downloaded.

As with anyEpic Games Storefree offering, users should keep their expectations healthy. While it can’t be denied that theEGS free gameshave been incredibly generous, filling users' libraries with dozens of fun games, they rarely offer major releases. Part of the fun of a mystery game is the surprise, though.
