According to EA, this promotion is soRocket Arenaplayers can invite their friends to experience the Season 1 content with them, but it could be a sign that the game is struggling in the sales department. Despite not even being a month old, EA has already addedRocket Arenato the EA Access Vault, and has also made it free-to-play this weekend on Xbox and Steam.

Prior to launch, manycriticizedRocket Arenafor not being free-to-play, as it appears to embrace a free-to-play monetization model. For the uninitiated,Rocket Arenais a live-service game that looks to keep itself funded through the sale of Battle Passes and seasonal content. Despite this, the game has a retail price of $29.99. Other live-service multiplayer games likeFortniteandCall of Duty: Warzonehave shown that the free-to-play model can ensure a thriving online community of players, so it’s unclear whyRocket Arenawent in the opposite direction.

Depending on how successfulRocket ArenaSeason 1is, it seems like an inevitability that the game will be going completely free-to-play sooner rather than later. However, it’s also possible that EA will stick to its guns and keepRocket Arenaas a premium game instead of free-to-play.

In the meantime, those that enjoy the game can look forward tonewRocket Arenamaps, game modes, and more in the weeks ahead.
