As with pretty much every streaming service, and most subscriptions in general,Disney Plusreleased at a fairly competitive price for users, hoping to siphon some viewers from other platforms and seem like a better deal overall. However, as with every platform that eventually finds success, the price has inevitably begun to rise as the service now has a solid core audience and plenty of exclusive offerings, such asThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier, that will keep people on the hook through a few bumps in cost.

When the platform first launched, the subscription costs were significantly cheaper than the competition like Netflix andWarnerMedia’s HBO Max. Even with its still growing userbase, Disney Plus has decided the best move is to increase the monthly subscription costs by a dollar, going from $7 a month to $8, and raising the yearly plan to $80 from its original $70 price. Even after this increase, the price of a monthly subscription will still slightly undercut Netflix, which currently costs $9.
This price point does not include Disney Plus Premier Access, which is still billed as a separate subscription on top of the normal plan. For $30 users get access to select Disney titles as they release. The option was first created forMulan, which couldn’t manage a traditional theater release thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic. Since then, the company has also addedRaya and the Last Dragon, withCruellaandBlack Widowexpected to hit premiere accesson release as well.
Given the value of the service and the success of the platform, it’s not surprising that Disney is looking to start dialing up the price, even if it’s just in slow increments. This most recent increase took effect as of March 26th and also saw a slight price hike to the bundle plans, which include services like Hulu andESPN Plus. While it will be a slight inconvenience for customers, thankfully it’s not a huge increase, and Disney Plus users have a lot to look forward to on the service over the next few years.
