The 1990s was an incredibly influential time for gaming, and in particular, the PC gaming world. The 90s saw a plethora of excellent titles launch, a good deal of which would go on to influence and shape the modern gaming industry as a whole. Titles likeDoom,Half-Life,Age of Empires,StarCraft, and of course,Diablo, can all be seen today in the gaming industry, baked into the very DNA of the genres they helped start or popularize. Though some of these groundbreaking 90s franchises haven’t made the transition into modern gaming, a good handful have, withDiablobeing one of the best. Now,Diablo 4is on the horizon.
It’s been over a decade since the last mainlineDiablogame first released, and though various spin-offs and remasters have come out in the time since, fans have been desperate for the next fully-fledged entry. Thankfully, come next year, fans will get their wish, asDiablo 4is finally set to release. ThoughDiablo 4was announced back in 2019, Blizzard has drip-fed information to fans since, only givinga few gameplay and story detailsevery few months. But now, all five ofDiablo 4’s classes have been confirmed, and there’s quite a bit to dive into.

Diablo 4’s Necromancer
The most recent and finalDiablo 4class to be revealed was the Necromancer. What used to be one oftheDiabloseries' most passive classesmay now be one of its most complex, trading out simple spells for a two-resource system. The main resource the Necromancer will use is called Essence, which is what lets the player cast a range of spells. While Essence does regenerate over time, the player will also be able to manually refill the bar by performing basic attack actions.
The Necromancer will also have access to a secondary resource called Corpses. The amount of Corpses at the Necromancer’s disposal is determined by the amount of dead enemies in the arena. The more dead bodies around, the more Corpses can be used to set deadly traps or summon undead enemies to aid in battle. As well as the usual staffs, swords, and daggers,Necromancers are also able to wield scythes.
The Necromancer will have four different playstyles to choose from, each coming equipped with their own unique set of skills and abilities. The first of these playstyles is called Bone, which is essentially the tank role. Bone abilities grant the player immensely powerful attacks that use a great deal of Essence, butunleash devastating spellscapable of wiping out an entire screen of enemies.
The Blood playstyle is more of a support role, granting the Necromancer various blood magic abilities. When defeating enemies, the Necromancer’s blood abilities will drain the energy from their foes, which can then be used to heal or buff the party. Darkness is a similar playstyle, where instead of draining energy from enemies to support allies, the drained life-force can be used to inflict debuffs and damage onto enemies. The final playstyle available to Necromancers is The Army, which allows the player to summon a swarm of AI allies such as undead skeletons. While it’s recommended that players stick to one type of playstyle,Diablo 4will let players choose any skill they desire from any tree so that players can mix and match.
Diablo 4’s Sorceress
Much like any othermage class in an RPG, the Sorceress isDiablo 4’s crowd control class, capable of wiping swarms of enemies in just one spell. However, this immense power does come at a cost, as the Sorceress' health is the lowest of the bunch, which could make her a difficult one to play as in soloDiablo 4runs.
Currently, four of the Sorceress' Minor Destruction skills have been confirmed, all of which deal a good amount of damage, and often have a lingering status effect. Lightning, for instance, damages a chain of enemies, Fire Bolt causes damage and inflicts bleed for eight seconds, and Frost Bolt can chill an enemy, slowing them down. On top of this, the Sorceress hassix Major Destruction spells, each of which are essentially just more powerful versions of the Minor skills. All the usuals are here, like Chain Lightning, Fireball, Incinerate, and Frozen Orb.

Diablo 4’s Rogue
The Rogue is one ofDiablo 4’s most unique classes, offering both melee and ranged proficiencies. To capitalize on both of these skills, the Rogue can unlock three Specialization skill trees. The first of these, Shadow Realm, allows the player to become invincible for one second, while nearby enemies are pulled into the void, and are weakened. Exploit Weakness is another Specialization, allowing all attacks to a weak spot to become critical hits for a limited time. Combo Points is the final Specialization, giving the Rogue’s standard attacks combo points with each consecutive strike.
On top of a range of both melee and ranged skills, including some series staples like Rain of Arrows, Dash, and Arrow Barrage,Diablo 4’s Rogue classcan also imbue their weapons with three different elements. Frost Imbue gives the Rogue’s attacks the chill status effect, while Acid Imbue adds poison and Shadow Imbue grants the shadow effect.
Diablo 4’s Barbarian
The tank of the group,Diablo 4’s Barbarian class has the most health of the lot and is capable of taking an impressive amount of damage. Much like the rest of the series,Diablo 4’s Barbarian will charge up a Fury meterwith each consecutive attack, which can then be used to unleash a devastating attack, such as Double Swing, Rend, and Whirlwind.
The big change frompreviousDiabloentriesis that this version of the Barbarian class will have access to an Arsenal System. This grants the Barbarian four separate weapon slots, allowing the player to equip two-handed and one-handed weapons in the same build. It seems as thoughDiablo 4’s Barbarian might may be the toughest the franchise has seen thus far.
Diablo 4’s Druid
A mage who’s at one with nature,Diablo 4’s Druid class is able to temporarily turn themselves into a variety of vicious beasts at the drop of a hat. Both the Druid’s Basic skills and their Spirit skills will allow them toturn into a werewolf or a werebearand unleash a powerful attack, such as Pulverize or Maul. On top of that, the Druid class is constantly followed by two wolf companions, both of which aid the party in battle. The Druid also has a range of elemental attacks at their disposal, such as Earthspike, Storm Strike, and Tornado.
Diablo 4will launch in 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
