Summary
In 2023, gamers have had two incredibly large space exploration games to enjoy that offer their own differing, yet satisfying experiences. Earlier this year,Star Wars Jedi: Survivorreleased and continued Cal Kestis' story from where it left off inFallen Order, inviting players once again to explore thevast universe that theStar Warsfranchise offers. On the other hand,Starfieldhas now been made available for players everywhere, and it offers a completely original experience hand-crafted by Bethesda Softworks that serves as a love letter to all the science fiction media that came before. Between both games, players will certainly have a hard time running out of things to do and places to see.
On top of other similarities,StarfieldandStar Wars Jedi: Survivorshare something rather interesting, and that’s the fact that many players will likely call a robot their co-pilot. InJedi: Survivor, Cal’s little droid friend BD-1 serves many in-game functions while also being a sweet companion in the overall story. One of the very first companions and crew members players will have in Bethesda’s game is Vasco, the robotic co-pilot of the last Frontier captain. These droids are great at tugging at players' heartstrings while boasting some intriguing similarities and differences.

Starfield and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s Personable Robot Companions
Right off the bat, there are some rather strong similarities between thefan-favorite BD-1 droidand Vasco in terms of design. Both primarily use white, red, and dark gray primarily in their design while sticking to blocky, rectangular shapes for their head and limbs. Both of them even have a big camera-eye on their right-hand sides, though BD-1 has Vasco beat in terms of depth perception and overall cuteness due to BD’s smaller, portable size.
As the two serve as companions for Cal and the captain of the Frontier, they have personalities that make them memorable. As helper robots, bothStarfield’sVascoand BD-1 have friendly dispositions, offering to aid both the player and Cal at a moment’s notice. Vasco in particular acts as a guide duringStarfield’stutorial, helping fans get acclimated to their role as captain of a brand-new starship with ease. As Cal has more freedom to express himself as his own character, he also has his own bonding moments with BD-1 that endear players rather easily.
How Starfield’s Vasco and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s BD-1 Serve Similar But Different Purposes
However, both helper robots differ massively in how they help in terms of gameplay. BD-1 constantly sits on Cal’s shoulder, and only speaks in beeps and boops. Vasco, on the other hand, may be the companion toteachStarfieldfans what they can expectfrom their followers, but he isn’t the only one. If players choose to have Vasco follow them on their journey, he functions no different from any other companion apart from his deadpan, factual, and positive personality.
This is likely due to the fact thatStarfieldandStar Wars Jedi: Survivormay focus on exploring planetsand uncovering mysteries in their main stories, both games belong to different genres.Jedi: Survivoris more of an action-adventure epic that involves BD-1 as a key part of its plot twists along the way, whileStarfieldis newest of Bethesda’s well-known RPGs. RPGs are known for giving fans the power to make choices that affect multiple parts of the game, and just how much Vasco himself is involved is completely up to which companions players want to take with them.
No matter how much BD-1 and Vasco may differ, at the very end of the day, those who like robots and love space exploration might enjoy bothStarfieldandStar Wars Jedi: Survivor. While different, each title may make up for what the other one lacks, as whileStar Wars Jedi: Survivorhas a lengthy main story,Starfield’sNew Game Plusalmost makes it so the game never ends.
Starfieldis available on PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
