Episode 4 ofClassroom of the Elitewas a refreshing break from the constant, nerve-wracking tests Class 1 went through at the Cruise Ship. In episode 3, the VIP test ended in a win for Class 1-C; however, Class 1-D didn’t fall too far behind in terms of ranking. Above all, the episode revealed a new partnership between Ayanokoji and Karuizawa, a partnership that has the potential to make or break Class 1-D.
The events in episode 4 ofClassroom of the Elitewere not surprising, considering the past occurrences in the anime. Still, that didn’t mean it lacked the usual “thrilling” effect. With the episode ushering in the second term, events like the Sports Festival will be the center of attraction. How Ayanokoji and his allies will handle upcoming tests is still unknown, but regardless, the episode hinted at a brewing storm that will shake the very foundation of Class 1-D.

The Sports Festival
The first fewminutes of the episodeshowed viewers how the VIP in every group was assigned by the school. The key to determining the VIP identities was to rearrange the members of a group alphabetically and pick out the specific person that falls under the number category of the group name in the nine planets. For instance, the VIP for Mars (fourth planet from the sun) group will be the fourth person on the list of Mars group members if all their first names are listed alphabetically. Unfortunately, Ryuen figured out how the system worked earlier than Class D members, leading to his class’s success in the test. In this scene, Horikita openly admitted that teamwork wasn’t important for Class 1-D other classes in other tests, confirming the character’s level-headedness despite her haughty nature.
The highlight of episode 4 was the Sports Festival, a new opportunity for Class D to climb up the ranks. However, this new development seems to have higher stakes compared to the previous tests Class D engaged in. At the Sports Festival, there will be two teams: Team Red & Team White, meaning that this test will be more of an inter-class match than the regular 1v1 class matches. The more surprising aspect of this festival is the pairing ofClass D as a whole with Class A. The consequence of this development is an exciting and unpredictable one since the junior classes have never worked together before. The rundown of the Sports festival involves the following:
There is really nothing to celebrate about the high-stake “Sports Festival” due to the several factors involved. What’s more, the decision-making is left to students, who will determine the right individuals to participate in each sporting activity. During lunch break after the briefing ofthe Sports Festival, Horikita Suzune approached Ayanokoji indirectly, seeking counsel from her calculating classmate. Indeed, Ayanokoji gives her a calculating response, telling her how the Sports Festival is different from their past “tests” while cryptically hinting at a method to trump the test.

The Clash Between Horikita & Karuizawa
After the break, members of Class 1-D assembled to discuss the measures they would use to tackle the upcoming test in the form of the “Sports Festival.” Originally, everyone agreed to the skill idea, involving the athletic members of Class 1-D taking part in the voluntary tests to assure their wins until Horikita interjects. She proposed the idea that instead of just using themost athletic membersof Class 1-D in voluntary events, there should be “optimized combinations” involving a balanced mix of athletic and non-athletic members to achieve a good result. While this plan seems sound and easy to work with, a classmate quickly points out the weakness of this proposal since it puts the non-athletic members at a disadvantage. Regardless, Horikita still drives her point, stating that her suggestion will help Class-D in the long run.
The minor argument continues until Karuizawa steps and reveals her dislike for the plan. While offering weak counterarguments against Horikita, she manages to catch the sentiment of some members of the class. In the end, Hirata settles the disagreement with a class vote which ends in Horikita’s favor. After the class meeting, the episode finally showed fans the true mastermind behind Karuizawa’s interjection: Ayanokoji. AlthoughAyanokoji refused to reveal the intentbehind his actions, he gave Karuizawa a prediction of what would happen at the end of the Sports Festival; a prediction aimed at fully winning her trust when it happens. Ayanokoji also reveals a part of his secondary goal, which is to make Class D capable of rising to Class A.
Before the episode ends, Ayanokoji admonished Horikita, showing how teamwork truly works and why it is essential for Class 1-D to stick together for them to win the Sports Festival. Furthermore, he revealed shocking information about Kushida being a traitor that is leaking inside information from Class 1-A to other classes. Interestingly, the reveal was not just to inform Horikita but to also suggest a plan involving Kushida to utilize her treachery. Theingenious methodAyanokoji intends to use is still unclear; however, it is enough to suggest that the upcoming developments inClassroom of the Elitewill be rigged with thrilling experiences
