Redditor aur0n has exposed theCall of Duty: Warzonecheaters forum, and it has become apparent that cheaters are very upset with arecent change made to the game. Naturally, the game’s more honest player base is loving the reaction, as it is they who suffer when a cheater enters a lobby.
Especially due to cross-play capabilities,Call of Duty: Warzonehas been plagued by a lot of cheaters ruining the game for others. When Infinity Ward is able to detect them, they are dealt a swift and harsh perma-ban, but sometimes finding these cheaters isn’t always easy.

Now it seems that Infinity Ward has anew method of finding cheaters, and it is doling out bans in the most exciting way. Rather than banning cheaters traditionally, Infinity Ward is using shadowbans, which are unannounced bans that keep the cheater guessing at whether or not they’ve been banned yet.
Essentially, a shadowban doesn’t alert the player whatsoever. They are still able to load up the game, use all of its menus, etc, but they cannot find matches online no matter how long they wait. This is understandably frustrating, but it is hard to feel sympathy for those that would cheat in a video game likeCall of Duty. This, paired with Infinity Ward’s requirement thateveryWarzoneaccount has a unique and valid phone number, is making it so that some cheaters can’t even make alternate accounts to play the game anymore.
The user on thecheaters forumpoints to one specific modder and the cheat that he is selling as to the reason why he was banned, but more than likely this has affected other cheaters with other mods as well. Reaction to this on Reddit is a mixed bag, with some claiming unparalleled joy at the whining of cheaters while others are simply disgusted at those who would cheat at a competitive multiplayer game. What makes this worse, perhaps, is the little known fact that these cheaters actually spend more money to purchase cheats from modders online, which surely makes getting banned for it feel even more like a punch to the gut.
There are some users which claim that shadowbanned players can find matches online, but only against other shadowbanned players. That said, this claim has not been substantiated in any way, so while it would be great fun to see a lobby full of only cheaters, there have been no videos posted of these kinds of lobbies. Infinity Ward did state that it “updated matchmaking tomatch suspected cheaters together,” however.
Call of Duty: Warzoneis available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
