Summary

Lies of P, the Soulslike action RPG retelling of Pinocchio being made by Korean developer Round 8 Studio, has confirmed gold status for its launch on September 19.Lies of Ptakes heavy inspiration from lauded Japanese studio FromSoftware’s gothic horror megahitBloodborne, as it features a similar gloomy setting and atmosphere, as well as punishing fast-paced combat.

First announced in 2021,Lies of Pturned heads as an incredibly dark Soulslike gamebased on the legendary, and usually upbeat fable of Pinocchio. Coming from a not-so-well-known developer and publisher combo in Round 8 and Neowiz Games, it initially seemed to many like a concept too extraordinary and outlandish to ever see the light of day, despite its impressive and exciting tone-setting CGI reveal. Over a year later at Gamescom 2022,Lies of Pwas legitimized when it revealed its plans to launch day one into Xbox’s popular subscription service Game Pass on September 19.

Now, with more eyes on it, thanks to Game Pass and an impressive four-hour demo available to the public,Lies of Phas become one of 2023’s most anticipated games. With September just around the corner,Lies of Phas taken to Twitter to confirm that it has gone gold and is ready to be released next month. The tweet, accompanied by a photo of the development team underneath it, hints at some elements of the game’s setting, expressing excitement for players' arrival at Krat Train Station and a brief mention of the Black Rabbit Brotherhood, which is likely an antagonistic faction players will have to square up against.

Although news of a highly anticipated title “going gold” can be incredibly exciting, it’s important to remember that this isn’t a guarantee thatLies of Pwon’t still see a delay. In 2020 CD Projekt Red’sblockbuster RPGCyberpunk 2077had notoriously seen its final delay shortly after declaring gold status, thus revoking its claim of going gold. With the game ultimately launching in a disastrous state in December 2020, many gamers began losing faith in games declaring that they’ve gone gold. That said, as many big games that have been released sinceCyberpunk 2077haven’t shared this same fate, it wouldn’t make sense to expectLies of Pto do the same at this point.

WhileLies of P’s concept is incredibly unique and its gameplay impressive, it is launching into a very busy month of game releases. Xbox’s own massive space-faring RPGStarfieldlaunches just two weeks prior, andLies of P’s September 19 release date is also occupied by theheavily anticipatedMortal Kombat 1. Other big games likeBaldur’s Gate 3’s arrival on PS5,NBA 2K24, Ubisoft’sThe Crew Motorfest, andPayday 3also populate a crowded September. As the only major Soulslike release, it’ll be interesting to see ifLies of P’s day one Game Pass launch will also help it stand out among the sea of new Fall video games.

Lies of Pis coming to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on September 19.
