Sonic the Hedgehoghas developed quite the entourage over the decades, and though well over half of them are either forgettable or despised, there are plenty of fan favorites. One standout who has almost been around since the beginning is Sonic’s unwanted girlfriend and hammer-wielding teammate Amy Rose.

Amy Rose, also known as Rosie the Rascal, was introduced in 1993’sSonic CD. She was playable in a couple of spin-off racing games before her proper gameplay debut in 1999’sSonic Adventure. Amy is a good-natured and energetic hedgehog who develops an all-consuming crush onSonic, which leads her to follow him on all of his adventures. Unfortunately, in her early appearances, her infatuation with Sonic was her only character trait, but she’s picked up a more identifiable personality over the years.

Updated on April 1st, 2025 by Chad Thesen:Amy Rose has experienced many different incarnations, each with personality trait alterations. A good voice actress for the character can vary wildly depending on how well they bring her live-action variant to life. Some will be more lively and spry, others may be better at being sassy and feisty. It won’t be easy, but everyone involved will need to work together to write and cast the best possible choice.

TheSonic Boomcartoon was probably herhigh point as a character, adding both an element of unhinged temperament and emotional maturity. Even her relationship with Sonic has become more nuanced. Amy is a much more complete character in her modern incarnations, and with her long-running key importance to the franchise, it’s a foregone conclusion that she’ll join the continuing Sonic movie universe.

Cindy Robinson

A seemingly obvious pick, yet one fraught with setbacks. Cindy Robinson has been the voice of Amy for over a decade now, beginning inSonic Free Riders. She’s the performer that brought the aforementioned franchise’s best take on the character to life inSonic Boom.Colleen O’Shaughnessey’s surprising casting as TailsinSonic the Hedgehog 2set the precedent that the films could bring the series' regular voice cast into the new medium, a rarity in the industry.

However, Robinson, along with the long-time voice of Sonic Roger Craig Smith, announced that she would not be returning to the role after 11 years and at least 17 projects. Then again, shortly thereafter, both she and Smith were cast in theupcoming video gameSonic Frontiers, so it’s hard to say where they are in the franchise. If Robinson decides she’s not done with the role, after all, she’s fantastic in the role and her history with the character would bring a ton to the film. Robinson can also be heard in recurring roles such as Makoto in theBlazBlueseries or Operetta inMonster High.

Amy is a fun character because her primary traits are set, but the sliders of her personality are always in flux. Kendrick is a gifted performer who could bring out both her empathetic team therapist side and her unhinged aggressive side. Whichever way the film chose to portray Amy Rose, Anna Kendrick would be an obviously great choice for the role.
